You had seriously never heard the pixies music before?

I had never heard an entire album.

(1)
River Euphrates is my favorite Surfer Rosa track.

(2)
The whole album is free of filler though.

(1)
This is probably the other track I'm thinking of. I'm almost positive as a matter of fact.

(2)
Really? You like every song on that album?

Yep, it is one if my favorite albums to listen to beginning to end. Gigantic is probably my least favorite song on the album actually.

Now I didn't necessarily feel this way after my first listen. I remember initially thinking some of the tracks were pretty abrasive.

If not for Doolittle, I would not even be a fan.

Yeah, I heard The Uncle Bobby Band. Sort of the same idea.

The Pixies is my easiest back-listening project to date (from a # of tracks perspective), so I'm gonna give each album several listens. Perhaps I'll warm to Surfer. I hope I do. I like liking music.

All I know is that there were rumors he was into field hockey players... And the next day... he was gone.

I love that album. Man, Vamos blew my mind as a high school kid. Even the more slight tracks were awesome. The above referenced I'm Amazed, but also, Tony's Theme? Holy crap. That song was designed to be played at 11.

ETA: This is a bit of a generational thing, but music then was designed to be played out of speakers, not headphones. I think more recent music is designed to be these aural landscapes that take place totally in your own headspace. They are designed for earbuds. 80s music was meant to be played loud on a crappy boombox in your high school cafeteria. It was meant to be abrasive because it had to fight for your attention.

You raise a good point. I've said before that I've only really listened* to an album if/when I've listened to it loud and in my car. Not that my car has good speakers -- it doesn't. But in a small car with the volume turned way the funk up, you hear every ounce there is to hear.

I listened to Surfer Rosa yesterday in my apartment, not my car.

*As in, fully appreciated the value of.

This. Surfer Rosa is still pretty swell, though. Especially in the context of the 99% rubbish that's being put out today.
