What do you think of Stevie Ray Vaughan

I nevere see him mentioned on here but how do you rate him?

He may be my favorite guitarist ever. Certainly in my top 4, which is probably a 4 way tie for #1.

It's pretty awesome that David Bowie kinda discovered him

Jackson Browne was the one that helped Double Trouble record their first CD if I remember the story correctly.

Great guitarist, but I don't find myself wanting to listen to his songs very often.

There's no thinking - only worshiping when it comes to SRV

Pretty much how I feel. I can't hate on the guy, but his sound just doesn't really do it for me.

Grew up with SRV, whatever taping he did in Austin sweating his soul out is awesome. Reese lives in Nashville and is still a ninja.

Recently, a guitar buddy got me to also appreciate his bro more than I had-not the same chops but real iconic parts.

unbelievable talent the died too young. has such a unique sound that he is one of the few guitarists I can identify with a 2 or 3 notes, even with an unfamiliar track. his range is lacking when compared to the blues greats, but I do think he compares favorable to the blues greats. little wing and pride and joy are classics in my mind. his brother is talented but a disappointing reminder of Stevie's greatness.

fyi, my top 5 are skydog, slowhand, jimi, srv, trucks/warren for a fifth place tie

He played so aggressive, yet hit every damn note. One of the reasons I play and love blues. Legend, one of the greatest to ever play.

I can't say I put his music on all that often, but I do love it. He's much better appreciated by watching him on YouTube or an old concert DVD. He's totally amazing.

Heck, I listen to the guy all the time. Love his sound--guitar and voice. His guitar skills sometimes make folks forget about his almost-without-equal blues singing voice. Even better, all the greatest artists loved him. Check out the quotes about him by pretty much every influential musician you ever heard of... WikiQuotes

quote:

Eric Clapton: I don't think anyone has commanded my respect more, to this day. The first time I heard Stevie Ray, I thought, "Whoever this is, he is going to shake the world." I was in my car and I remember thinking, I have to find out, before the day is over, who that guitar player is. That doesn't happen to me very often, that I get that way about listening to music.

quote:

Buddy Guy: Stevie is the best friend I ever had, the best guitarist I ever heard, and the best person anyone will ever want to know. He will be missed a lot.

Probably my favorite ever! My uncle used to tell me stories of hanging out in bars in Austin in the 70s/early 80s and seeing Stevie. I still get chills watching him do Third Stone from the Sun at the El Macambo

re: What do you think of Stevie Ray Vaughan
His version of Little Wing is an example of why people pick up a guitar ever. The wish that some day you could just take apart a song like that and the guitar like that and put it all back together the way you want it to.

Against all time greats? There already was a Jimi Hendrix so Vaughns early death hurts him. Jimi changed the way everybody played at a time when everything was changing. So he always has to be up there. Even though he was probably only known and relevant for 5ish years.

Would be cool to see how the guys aged though? IF they could all age like Clapton. That dude is what an old guy should age like. Amazing when you consider he probably had just as much self abuse in the 60-70's as any of them.
