I recently moved to Houston but have not yet registered my truck here (LA title, not required to title in TX...to my knowledge). Instead of registering it and paying the taxes, I have put it up for sale and already have a couple offers. How/where do I transfer the title and make the sale official? Also, what steps do I need to take to protect myself from tickets and all that nonsense after the fact? Any help is appreciated. I have looked it up on the state's site but it doesn't mention out of state titles.

Call any notary who handles auto title transfers for details on the process. I've used the notary located inside the Sears store in BR. It's simple, cheap and quick.

Awesome. I imagine the procedure wouldn't be any different than if it was done in LA. Thanks for your help Russian.

You're welcome.

Be sure to take the license plate off your vehicle and destroy it yourself (or leave it with the notary to submit to DMV) when you close on the sale with the notary. I learned that the hard way.

They have title businesses in Louisiana for sure that you basically walk into and do the transfer for a fee. And they work with the Motor Vehicle Dept so the new title gets sent to teh new owner and all is good. New plate comes days later. Have done it twice for basically under $100 bucks

The best thing about it is its all done right and legal with all govmnt agencies.

or you could bypass that extra fee from a notary and do it your self. read your la title in the top portion on the back.

you only need a printed or hand drawn bill of sale with 2 witnesses signature and have one of them come with the buyer and its all done. but in tx on a tx title you dont need a bill of sale at all like LA. i know this because i have bought a few cars fom tx and all they do is sign the title over to you and your done.

Not only are you required to title in TX, but legally speaking it must be done with 30 days of the move.

You have 90 days to get the driver's license.

The above is probably why

I had to show my bill of sale when I registered my car FWIW.

According to the state's website, the 30 day requirement is to register your vehicle, not title. It specifically says you are not required to change your title to a TX title if you do not want to.

When we traded my wife's car in in TX we had to fill out a TXDOT form to notify them of no longer owning the vehicle.

However, this is probably not relevant since you are not registering your car here anyway.

Texas is very picky about registering your cars. I had to provide proof of vehicle registration when filling out my homestead exemption form.

That's odd.

When I registered, they took my title and gave me a new Texas one via mail and didn't give me an option about it.
