Beach fishing

I want to do some fishing from the beach this summer on vacation. My brother and I go down to gulf shores several times a year and want to purchase some gear. I fear walking into a shop down there and asking "what do I need" for fear of being arse raped with over priced crap.
What say the OB should I buy in terms of a rod, reel, and basic tackle? I don't know shite about fishing, but want to learn. I got the drinking part down without any problem.

Check this thing out.
Surf Rocket
Surf Rocket
quote:
Increase your casting distance by 500% (over 500 feet) with The Surf Rocket, a specially designed compressed air casting cannon! This gives you the upper hand by allowing you to cast your bait into the deep water, past the sand bar, without a boat, right from the beach.
With our system you can chum any area before fishing. No more chasing tides for deep water or watching birds work on the bait out of reach.

I am bringing my kayak to Orange Beach this weekend to get my line out past the seaweed into deeper water
Hope i can hook a big red, jack or shark

Long rod. Good reel that won't get eaten up. Long stringer. Basic tackle. Couple plastics on jig heads, corks, topwaters

Get a bogagrip, there's a lot of toothy fish out there in ocean. Long rod, reel with lots of line capacity, get a spinning reel if you've never fished before.
