him winning one award a few more times than dylan makes him more critically praised? maybe that goes to show how weak the music industry is now compared to dylan's day?

if you polled the top critics on the top rap artists, i bet kanye would be about half of the vote, if not less.

i think you need a little more than those awards to argue that 'ye is the most celebrated pop artist.

you really think he's more celebrated than the beatles, stones, dylan, etc? hell no, and i'm a huge fan.

I just don't understand how this is a legitimate critique of Jay-Z. Who gives a shite that Em ripped him up on one track? Man, at that point in Em's career he was capable of destroying virtually ANYONE in the game. At least Jigga had the nuts to put Em on a track; look at who else had the balls to do the same thing during that time period. Exactly -- nobody. Every rapper has verses and tracks that are weak. That's one of Jay-Z's. Kanye has a ton of weak tracks too.

It's not one award. It's a compendium of all major music critics in the country, compiled into one poll. It's not even an award, it's an exercise in determining the critical consensus. I used an objective criteria to determine critical rating and no one, I mean no one, does better than Kanye.

And there's a lot of great music being made now.

Jay z kills kanye and it's not even close. Listen to the Intro on the Dynasty - Roc La Familia.

The theme song to The Sopranos
Plays in the key of life on my mental piano
Got a strange way of seeing life like
I'm Stevie Wonder with beads under the doo-rag
Intuition is there even when my vision's impaired, yeah
Knowing I can go, just switching a spare
On the highway of life, **** it's sharp in my sight
Oh! Keen senses ever since I was a teen on the benches
Every time somebody like Ennis was mentioned
I would turn green, me, being in the trenches
Him, living adventureous, not worrying about expenditures
I'm braving temperatures below zero, no hero
No father figure, you gotta pardon a ****
But I'm starving, my ****s, and the weight loss in my figure
Is starting to darken my heart, 'bout to get to my liver
Watch it my ****s, I'm trying to be calm but I'm gon' get richer
Through any means, with that thing that Malcolm palmed in the picture
Never read the Qu'ran or Islamic scriptures
Only psalms I read was on the arms of my ****s
Tattooed so I carry on like I'm non-religious
Clap whoever stand between Shawn and figures
****s say it's the dawn, but I'm superstitious
shite is as dark as it's been, nothing has gone as you predicted
I move with biscuits, stop the heart of ****s acting too suspicious
This is food for thought -- you do the dishes

Don't forget Jay don't write that shite down. Its all off the top of his dome.

sure we could, but here's the point. As gloriously overpraised as Radiohead is, and I agree, they are obnoxiously overpraised, Radiohead has not had as much plaudits heaped upon them as Kanye. Radiohead is overpraised and even they aren't as overpriased as Kanye. that's staggering.

I don't know about that man. Go find a handful of "best albums ever" lists. You'd be hard pressed to find one that doesn't have one of Ok Computer, Kid A, and The Bends in the top ten. In some of the lists, you'll have two out of the three in the top ten. The only Kanye album that has garnered that much critical acclaim is MBDTF.

quote:

I like Kanye. I think he's good. But he's not the producer Dre is and he's not the lyricist Talib Kweli is, for example. I think its telling that your bent out of sorts not that I'm positing that Kanye isn't really good, but that he isn't the undisputed best working artist. It's like even the slight bit of dissent is blasphemy to Kanye fans.

I don't want to give the impression I'm a Kanye fanboy. By no means am I bent out of shape. I think he is an atrocious rapper. But I've defended him in this thread because I think MBDTF, at the very least, should immunize him from allegations of suckitude. He may suck at life. But the guy that made that album doesn't suck at making music. Coupling all of the above with the fact that I've alway always thought Jay-Z was overrated, and I've gotta go with yeezy.

quote:

I do prefer Outkast to Kanye

Outkast is my favorite act of all time. Put Kanye up against Outkast in one of these threads, and you won't get the impression that I'm pedestalizing Kanye.

It's a legitimate critique of Jay-Z because people believe he's the best rapper on the planet. And, yes, props to him for including Em on his album. And, yes, Em at that time probably would have destroyed anybody.

But I think several other guys would have also destroyed Jay-Z. Lyrically, I just don't consider him to be the cream of the crop. After Biggie died, Jay-Z just sort of assumed the role as the best guy in NYC, and people just of went along with it. I didn't.

There's just no possible way that the people saying that "Kanye sucks" or "Kanye is the most overrated act since The Beatles" have actually listened to MBDTF in its entirety. That album is a masterpiece. It's both the most ambitious mainstream hip-hop album ever made, and the best produced

You are either trolling, have a bad taste in music, or you are just a moron. Maybe all three.

1. You bring nothing to the table as a poster.
2. I usually disagree with music critics, but on MBDTF, I share their opinion.
3. And so I'll ask you to tell the following that they have bad taste in music or that they are morons.*

Pitchfork's highest rated album ever. LINK

Spin, Billboard, Time, Slant Magazine, Pitchfork Media, Rolling Stone, Washington Post, and AV Club all rated it as the best album of 2010.

Was voted best album in The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics' poll for 2010, winning by the largest margin in the poll's history.

ETA: I could find more, but I don't feel like devoting any more time to responding to your dumb arse.

Now just so that we're clear, my opinion of an album -- or a song -- is based on the ear test and the ear test only. I don't even read album reviews. But I have included the above, just to emphasize that pretty much everybody thinks that you have bad taste in music.

What really got me is that you said it was the most ambitious and best produced hip hop album ever. Kanye himself would laugh at that (well maybe not since he is such a douche). Either way just an absurd statement.

Like the other poster said, have you ever even heard Paul's Boutique, Illmatic, or It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back?

Hell the last track on Paul's Boutique alone destroys anything Kanye has ever done.

Also, I like how you started personally attacking me. You my friend have been the biggest joke on this board since that whole Beatles/Oasis fiasco a few weeks ago.

Bobbyray: you made a thread comparing oasis to the beatles. Your musical opinion is that of a chimp. Basically any opinion you have, I am forced to disagree with by virtue. Sorry, but you earned it. You sucking Kanye off only confirms my feelings towards him.
