Heeler owners-any advice? (actually Lab/Heeler mix)

Got a new pup over the weekend. I've always had AKC labs in the past, but have been without a dog for over a year now. Ended up rescuing this guy and have only heard good things about Heelers so I'm hoping he'll end up a smart dog. Right now he's dumb as a box of rocks (expectedly) but in the long run, what can I expect from this mix? I pretty much know what to expect from a Lab but never had a Heeler.

OT, meet Cooper:

Grew up with a Blue Heeler and she was so amazing that my parents got another when she passed.

The most loyal dog breed I've ever come into contact with. Wonderful loving creatures.

combo of two smart breeds, will probably be a moron jk, I've got a heeler, and it's one of the smartest, and most easily trained dogs I've ever had, won't take a whole lot of work, and it'll be fun

Great looking dogs!

The one we had, had the worse farts of all time. Could have been the food though......

Very possible! I guess I'm just hoping for middle of the road type scenario. Not going for field trial champion or anything. He's just going to be a family dog that we do the average training with.

I understood.I just can't see any resemblance of anything heeler with that pup. Chill.

first things first.
Feed the dog in a crate, treat the dog in a crate and never,I mean never punish the dog while it's in its crate.
Make the crate it's safe zone.
Mine is crate trained and she will retreat to it like it's a secluded cave when she thinks she's in trouble.

Prepare for lots of running/exercise. My Heeler gets a bit destructive when not exercised enough.

Smart, loyal, easily trained. My sister in law has a full blooded one and I love that little guy. Just make sure you let him run off his energy. Other than that, GREAT dog.

He definitely has the same face shape as a heeler.

re: Heeler owners-any advice? (actually Lab/Heeler mix)

All of these descriptions sound like just about every lab I've ever owned, so that's good. Sounds like two smart, loyal breeds combined in one.

MJ2, I'm chill. I just took it the wrong way I guess. Thanks for the crate advice. I've never crate trained a dog as they're usually outside dogs and I had kennels for them.

He's only about 6 wks old, so a lot more features will become more prominent I'm sure. I agree that the lab is definitely the first thing that comes to mind when you see him though.
