Looks like internet sales tax legislation will pass the senate today

LINK

quote:

The Marketplace Fairness Act ( ), which easily cleared a set of procedural Senate votes in recent weeks, wouldn't technically impose any new taxes. Instead, it would give state governments the ability to collect Internet sales taxes from businesses headquartered outside of their respective state borders -- taxes that are technically already owed. Consumers are expected to declare those taxes on their state income tax returns but often don't.

A few questions:

1.) Where is the constitutional authority or congress to make such a law?

2.) This law seems like it would push retailers to offshore virtual malls where the transaction would take place from a foreign country with no sales tax?

3.) Who will enforce this new law?

I'm curious the impact this will have on Amazon/Ebay etc.

I will still use Amazon like crazy, but I'm sure some will revolt and drive, wait in line, hassle with wal-mart people to save a few cents.

"Fairness" or that which is deemed "fair" by the left has destroyed this nation. One of the many reasons is that "fairness" for the left is rooted in relativism.

Let the record reflect, if this passes congress and is signed by Obama, that Obama ushered in taxing the internet.

It will be interesting to see the faux-anarchist, hipsters and young commies that have grown up in the age of the internet explain that one away.

I'm more curious to see the growth of retail outlets located in tax friendly countries.

The GOP support this bill.

introduced by Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wy., while its co-sponsors include conservatives like Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and liberals like Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.

"conservatives like Sen. Lindsey Graham"

You won't necessarily have to have a physical warehouse of goods in a foreign country you just need your internet server located there.

Step 1: Order is placed in foreign country from internet.

Step 2: Foreign retailer places order with wholesaler to ship merchandise directly to consumer.

Sales tax avoided and shipping remains cheap.

I think that might work.

Or just use bitcoins.

This is going to put a huge fricking burden on smaller businesses...

Although it sounds like the states will have to come up with software for the companies to use in order to calculate the taxes, these businesses will have to hire more people in order to sift through and deal with all of the bull shite.

A company that does just over 1mil in annual sales is going to get slaughtered.

ACTUALLY, this is a scenario that i envision would fit within the concept of the ICC when written

this is "regulating commerce among the states" as it was originally intended

The democrats supported the Iraq War. In our society, the only thing that matters is the president's signature it would appear.

I thought the point of the ICC was to keep states from imposing taxes on each other?

Lets say a small internet business does a little over 1m in annual sales at a normal profit margin of 20%.

Depending on how many employees they have and other overhead charges, they aren't making much. How the frick are they going to afford to hire an accountant to keep up with state taxes?

Why don't we just save the government time and have our paychecks direct deposited into their accounts. Then let them decide how much we actually need and forward that amount to our accounts.

As a group they are NOT. However there are a couple of people within the GOP that gives me a glimmer of hope whereas there are none in the Democrat party.

That's pretty much what already happens if you're not self-employed, right?
