Communists showing up at a May Day rally isn't exactly breaking news. And he implied that the news station was involved in some sort of cover up, yet couldn't seem to find one of the flags when asked to point it out. He looked like an idiot.

Well first you say it isn't exactly breaking news but then you imply that he "looked like an idiot" since he couldn't point one out on the spot, though he did seem to indicate the location where they were nearest. I think the reporter more looked like the idiot if she doesn't know what a hammer and sickle represents while she is covering this leftist political event.

And I do think it would be important to highlight support for not just socialism or working class unity, but explicit symbolism and idolatry of international Communism. Something tells me if some right wing movement had a single Confederate flag or something that could be construed as politically controversial, they certainly wouldn't show so much restraint in covering it.

Communist flags are certainly newsworthy in covering that story. Otherwise, what are they even covering at the event if the presence and acceptance of political extremists is not "exactly breaking news?" Why not cover it and let the viewer decide?

I've worked as a reporter. You get all kinds of people coming up to you since you are "the media" with all sorts of complaints, requests. Reporters listen but remain wary. For all you (the reporter) know the guy who just walked up to you could pull out a gun, a knife, etc. to get "a celebrity" bleeding. You can understand the caution, the hesitancy to engage.

Commie flags at a May Day protest are expected. News? Why does the guy who posted this on YouTube think this is news? Does he go around to ESPN reporters filming college football tailgates and ask "you got the hot dogs, you gonna show the hot dogs on the grill....hey, hey, hot dogs man, show the hot dogs allright....hey, hey...."

Now were comparing hot dogs to communist flags in a major metropolitan area of America? It's funny watching you libs twist and contort your words to defend this kind of nonsense. Funny and ridiculous.

At any liberal rally there are going to be communists, socialists, union members, teachers, anti-war protesters, hemp activists, eco-nuts, anarchists, etc. That's who is there. They normally show a mix on the news, but I don't see the need to show every flag or sign so that the viewer can decide. We know what's up already.

I grew up in the New York city area. Only someone who is not from the area would think a commie flag on May Day is anything newsworthy, we see it every year, like clockwork. It is NOT news in New York, this is a LOCAL news reporter doing the local affiliate report, not a national story being created.

Really? The viewer knows what's up already? That is complete nonsense. And no one is asking them to "show every flag or sign," that is a straw man. The media is there (in theory) to cover the event in full. Not to pick and choose what to show. If there are Communists there openly and actively demonstrating, then that should absolutely be covered. Why on Earth would they not cover it? It actually portrays a false version of the event to not display the kinds of groups who are there OPENLY displaying extremist and radical political philosophies. To assume that the public simply knows already is a completely fallacious argument. The news coverage absolutely influences the way the public perceives the event and that is something that is not in question. Choosing not to display a radical group is to influence the way the public understands and perceives the event.

An exemplification of this notion is that the media will certainly jump on images at so called right wing "Tea Party" events that they can even remotely associate with political extremism. To imagine the argument of, "the media needn't cover inflammatory or politically radical symbolism at a right wing event since these elements will always flock there and the public knows what's up already" is simply incomprehensible. The very fact that they have shown extremely willing to stretch the portrayal of images of early American revolutionary symbols to illustrate a "radical" presence at these conservative rallies only further illustrates the hypocrisy of this line of thinking.

If there is an open and generally accepted presence of Communist imagery there, it should be covered appropriately and in it's proportional context, not hidden from the public in the coverage of the event lest the media be rightfully shown to be inconsistent and untrustworthy. Regardless of where one stands, intentional lack of coverage of these elements only serves to justify the distrust in the media that many have.

Communists marching in the May Day parade in New York city is simply NOT news. No-one even knows the damn parade is going on, it's barely a blip on the radar (quite frankly I am surprised a reporter was there at all).

Since communists and socialists have been forever tied to labor unions, probably not.

If you are covering the event, then yes it is. Perhaps the media in question didn't encounter them, but if they did and chose not to cover it, then they would be actively not covering a new worthy presence at the event. Why would one not cover Communists at the May Day gathering if you are going to cover the May Day gathering? That's a preposterous notion to me.

I guess the guy asking the question didn't know where the flags were. He could not point them out.

It would've been nice if he had shown the flags in the video. Otherwise, not quite sure of the point.

May Day is International Workers Day. Ida Siegal is from Channel 4 I think. Where is the news here?
