Should I really hope OSU has an actual chance to win this thing? I mean by seeding it seems so but I don't know enough to say if they really have a legit shot
Posted on 5/6/13 at 8:24 am to Buckeye06
Doubt OSU has enough team speed
Posted on 5/6/13 at 8:33 am to DollaChoppa
The winner of Cornell/Maryland is gonna beat OSU. I think both teams are better, though I think they are two of the best teams in the country.

How did JHU get left out? And how did OSU get a #1 seed?
Posted on 5/6/13 at 8:50 am to Porter Osborne Jr
OSU is a 3 seed. Cuse is the #1 seed.
Hop? I don't know how they are getting left out. 9-5 versus a tough schedule with wins over Maryland, Towson, and UVa, as well as an OT loss to UNC. I thought they were safely in, though as an unseeded team. Their only loss to a non-tourney team was Princeton, and that's hardly a bad loss.

Sorry, I should have said 3. There still looked like a few more deserving teams than OSU.

Once you get past the top two, it's pretty wide open. Cornell and Maryland killed their chances by having crappy tournaments, as I thought they were the other schools in the top 4. OSU gets the high number, but then they gotta play a team who spent time ranked #1 this year (both Cornell and MD spent time atop the poll).
Actually, it's pretty exciting as parity is really coming to lacrosse. Even five years ago, there was a pretty definite hierarchy. this is a wide open field. Outside of Cuse, no one has an easy draw and every seeded team except Cuse and Notre Dame should be in for a tough first round game.

I love seeing Hopkins out of the tourney. that's the biggest indicator of how far this sport has grown in just the past 5 years

Cuse missed a few years ago, but I see what you mean. This year's field doesn't have Hopkins or Princeton. Notre Dame is a favorite to make the finals, and Ohio St and Denver are seeded to make the Final Four.
That's great for the sport. Three teams in next year's Big Ten are in the field, all of them seeded (OSU, UMD, PSU). Cool time for the sport.

Do they use a selection committee?

that was 6 years ago
but they should've missed last year IMO. the only team worth a shite that they beat was Princeton. I don't really like them this year either. they had a couple losses to some bad teams, although they did split with Villanova and beat Notre Dame twice
Notre Dame has been good for a few years now, they've got a solid program and made the tourney the last 5+ years.
Denver has been on the quick rise since the program moved to D1. I mean last year, 3 of their 7 losses were to national champions Loyola by a combined 5 points, this year, they have 4 losses by a combined 6 points. Tierney knows what he's doing.
I just don't know what to think about Ohio State though. they've been waiting to break out for years now, they finally put together a great season, they and UNC are about as hot as you can get right now, but I just can't pick them until they show me a big signature win and prove they can play with the Terps, Duke, Cuse, etc.
cornell not getting a seed is just completely fricked up. 3 losses all by 1 point, one of those being to the number 1 seed on the road. they are number one in the laxpower computers and their SOS was higher than OSU and right there with Denver and Duke and if you look at the predicted scores vs. actual scores on Laxpower, they exceeded the predictions most of the time.

yes, AQ's from:
American East Conference
Colonial Athletic Conference
Eastern College Athletic Conference
Ivy Group
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
Patriot League
then at large bids based on RPI, SOS, and significant wins and losses.

I was gonna guess five, but I hedged and just went with a vague descriptor. It was a big deal when they missed, and I'm glad it wasn't a decade ago, making me feel old as hell.
To the committee's credit, they did follow their announced formula. Someone went through the trouble of working through their criteria and I'm not going to report their insane amount of work, but it lined up pretty closely to the seeds and omissions. So good on the committee for using their criteria. You can't complain if they do what they say they are gonna do.

no worries, I had to look it up because I couldn't remember if it was 2006 or 2007

that is true. I very rarely have many gripes about this tourney. it's usually set up very well for some good games.
I never knew you were into lacrosse though

I'll take Cuse v. Duke in the final.
Posted on 5/6/13 at 12:22 pm to TH03
I was a crease defender and occasional long stick middie. I had a disastrous career as a goalie that I'd rather not talk about.
I make my wife watch the national game of the week each Saturday on ESPNU.

UNC given 5 seed after going into selection ranked #1 in two polls.
Top SOS schools like Villanova and UVA not selected due to being below .500. Two AQs in Detroit and Bryant are below .500 however
This is why a committee for such a low number of teams is a dangerous proposition regarding football and LAX has 4 times as many teams in with half the number of those eligible.

something just is not right about all this

I was middie, sometimes attack. after I graduated, I coached for 3 years.
lacrosse is probably my favorite sport to watch, well tied with baseball.
did you play college?
