He doesn't get near enough of the recognition that he deserves for putting out great music and lyrics.

I picked up the Preludes CDs that came out a few years ago and this one in interesting:
Rosarita Beach Cafe
A lot of that ended up getting used in what I think is his best song:
Desperados Under the Eaves
I still listen the the original Warren Zevon CD frequently, excellent from beginning to end. His career was spotty but there was some great music even on his most mediocre albums.
RIP.

Every month we get a "Warren Zevon is underrated" thread
And I post that his 1976 album is one of my favorites, with every track a classic
And I add this single
See you next month

I dunno, I feel like Zevon is so "underrated" by this point he is actually now overrated

I dressed up as a Werewolf in London for Halloween one year. My hair was perfect, had a Chinese menu in my hand, sipping from a piña colada all night...
Only one guy really got it but it made his frickin night. Everyone else thought I was Teen Wolf...

I saw him in Nola in either 86 or 87. I also ate at Lee Ho Fooks in Chinatown in London in 98 as a gastrointestinal homage to The Great Man.

BTW, Zevon played the Varsity on 07/30/1994 and again in 1995 with a show that was acoustic and mostly solo (though he did have good warm up bands). I think there were 3 of us on the floor when he opened with Splendid Isolation in 1994 but it did get more crowded later. There were more in the Varsity in 1995 but it wasn't packed. I've missed my share of concerts but am very glad to have been at those two. He was still better with a full band though:
Full concert 1982

I think I started one of them within the last three or four months.
Although it wasn't that he was underrated. It was more an appreciation thread.

And I responded by saying it is one of my all time favorites. Was playing it in the car just last week. It was the epitome of the L.A. sound at the time with all of the usual suspects in the studio. It was also, perhaps, the best that came out of the L.A. rock scene at the time.

And I love the groove of this song:
