christian leaders condoning rape of non christian women. or something similar.

How about Christian leaders condoning the rape of children under their protection? Is that close enough?

quote:

That's really the test, isn't it?

No, it's not.

All religions have their yahoos. It's about the IDEAS, not personal. Though the essence of Christianity is personal, (supposedly) in the person of Christ.

There is no such thing as the "essence" of Christianity; or the "essence" of Islam for that matter.

This is the central fallacy behind every kind of thread of this nature.

re: Islam- A Political History Thru The Ages From Dr Bill Warner

quote:

Lets look at Christianity and Jesus' sayings. Jesus said he was the Truth, the Light and the Way. No one comes to the Father except thru Him.

So, Jesus must be correct or be a false prophet, which requires to be taken out of the city and stoned to death.

Now here comes mohammed: Jesus was a Great Prophet but I am the Last Prophet.

Either Jesus was the Son of God and the Messiah or He was a Liar. Either way mohammed MUST be wrong. Jesus must be considered the Son of God or a Liar.... A great prophet is not an option.

Stupendously naive reasoning.

I was in a Church last week (Sienna Italy) .. On the floor was a scene re-creating a battle vs Turks from the 12th Century, carving up children with their swords.

It's amazing how roundly some of the Christian conservatives on this board criticize Islam while ignoring their own religion's history.

i am neither christian nor muslim, but there are copious examples of jihadists engaging in wary in the name of islam going on currently. the islamic jihad currently, absolutely, dwarfs any christian-led conflict

quote:

That's nice, but when you consider the previous 1500 or so years of Christian-Muslim relations only a fool or someone deeply intellectually dishonest would conclude that Christians more more humane toward Muslims than vice verse.

western culture kind of dropped the whole "religious war" concept centuries ago, though. this is a silly statement

How is it silly? It's absurd to pretend that present-day Catholic "ecumenicism" is "real Catholicism," as opposed to mean, old Islam, without considering the way Roman Catholics from prelates to princes treated every religion other than Judaism as something to be totally wiped out until very recently.

re: Islam- A Political History Thru The Ages From Dr Bill Warner

What does that have to do with anything? We're talking about the supposed "essence" of Christianity vs the supposed "essence" of Islam. My point is that these essences don't exist: either religion could be interpreted in violent, theocratic, tyrannical ways.

Whether someone does interpret these religions in these ways depends on a number of causes that rarely if ever have to do with "true practical consequences" of "the true doctrine" of the religion.

modernity?

to quote a movie about this subject..."nothing...everything"

this isn't a war of religion as much as it is a war of modernity masked in jihad

quote:

We're talking about the supposed "essence" of Christianity vs the supposed "essence" of Islam.

i'm not. i'm talking about the reality of islam and christianity today

quote:

My point is that these essences don't exist: either religion could be interpreted in violent, theocratic, tyrannical ways.

sure, but christianity in reality has not been very theocratic, violent, or tyrannical

that movie is horrendous

quote:

this isn't a war of religion as much as it is a war of modernity masked in jihad

Yes, I agree.

quote:

i'm not. i'm talking about the reality of islam and christianity today

That's fine, but my "silly" comment was made in the context of someone who was saying essentially this. My point is that "radical Islam" can become de-radicalized no less than Christianity.

quote:

sure, but christianity in reality has not been very theocratic, violent, or tyrannical

Um, what.

that movie is horrendous

the director's cut is good, except for the fighting at the end and orlando bloom's character in general

quote:

Um, what.

in recent times

and "recent" means centuries. it's been a while since a good ole christian crusade. islamic jihad is going on in real time

Ah, well to be sure less violent. But the Crusades are very far from the only violent or tyrannical action undertaken by Christians. More often than not, Christians have been total horrors to one another.

But in the last centuries--even the last century--there have certainly been acts of Christian violence and tyranny.

On the whole, though, it's true that Christian fanaticism has been winding down ever since the Enlightenment.
