Admitted shameless last ditch effort for this thread.

The only way to make meaningful change is with evidence based information. The purpose of the media outlets is supposed to be the delivery of raw information to the public.

Many people have argued the validity of gun crime statistics recently and the possibilities to curb these tragedies. Additionally many have debated the varying degree of media bias interfering in those statistics.

Do you feel the following suggestion would support your current stance on firearms and/or the media?

All media sources should be required to report the following in stories about shootings in similar outline form at the start of the article/story.

Shooter: name, age, citizenship/unknown
Previous criminal record: yes/no/unknown
Gun obtained legally: yes/no/unknown
Gun used: make and model/unknown
Type of gun: rifle/handgun/shotgun/ unknown
Fire selection: single, semi auto, auto/unknown
Shooting prevented/ended by: legally armed citizen, illegally armed citizen, armed LEO, unarmed individual/unknown

Then at the back of the paper or web page there should be a section referencing the original article/story with all of that information updated monthly on every shooting reported on by that media outlet until sentencing for surviving known shooters, or for a period of 1 yr for all other shootings. The summary information should include the results of sentencing and a list of the prosecuted laws.

That type of raw data could be used to better make informed decisions and support beneficial change.

Media outlets recurrently presenting incorrect information above a certain threshold should be held financially accountable and their individual accurate reporting rankings should be made public. The proceeds from fines could be used to fund a victim’s assistance program.

First of all you can't the media what to say or not to say. How about reporting how person got gun and was it registered etc.? Moe importantly, how about an effort to not let so many guns out there?

I agree that the above information should be required. If the media is going to tell the story, they need to tell the whole story. But I'd add to your outline.

The other day I read a story about a store worker (owner?) who scared away two masked robbers by brandishing an AK-47. No shots fired by either side. Infer that the store worker did fire a shot, making him the shooter, and the media published the info you outlined about him. I would want the same information on the potential robbers, armed or not (through an update on the story if that info was not available at press time).

The FCC would disagree with you although I would agree that the precedence to apply this degree of control is limited.

Did you miss this part of my suggestion:

Gun obtained legally: yes/no/unknown

Mo(r)e importantly, how about an effort to not let so many guns out there?

Do you have fact based evidence that less guns would decrease violent acts? Or that guns are more often used to criminally cause harm than they are used to legally prevent harm?

No, you don't. And you don't because that data does not exist. Sensationalism, propaganda, emotion all move many to their current stance on these issues.

Interestingly not one of the responses has actually answered the question in the OP. I even bolded it so it would stand out.

Even if the data and reporting were completely objective (impossible) people would still draw their own conclusions, or rather the conclusions drawn by poltical parties.

agreed.

The 1st Amendment isn't optional. Neither is the 2nd, by the way.

I agree, out of context it is.

When it is applied as an if/then requirement and aimed at transparency then it is not that scary is it?

ex. If media runs a story on a shooting, then they must report the following in a standardized form.

Unless of course your political agenda is afraid of the truth.

I think you are confusing reporting and research. Journalism is not to be confused with the scientific method. Once you accept that the media only exist to sell advertising it becomes much less stressful.

Gun crime has plunged, but Americans think it's up, says study

quote:

Gun crime has plunged in the United States since its peak in the middle of the 1990s, including gun killings, assaults, robberies and other crimes, two new studies of government data show.

Yet few Americans are aware of the dramatic drop, and more than half believe gun crime has risen, according to a newly released survey by the Pew Research Center.

In less than two decades, the gun murder rate has been nearly cut in half. Other gun crimes fell even more sharply, paralleling a broader drop in violent crimes committed with or without guns. Violent crime dropped steeply during the 1990s and has fallen less dramatically since the turn of the millennium.

quote:

Despite the remarkable drop in gun crime, only 12% of Americans surveyed said gun crime had declined compared with two decades ago, according to Pew, which surveyed more than 900 adults this spring. Twenty-six percent said it had stayed the same, and 56% thought it had increased.

Most people are too lazy to think for themselves. They need someone to feed them whatever bull shite they're pushing. It would help if the media was unbiased and presented only facts and all of the facts.

The reality is the news has an agenda and it is not pro gun. Their actions are deliberate and I can't think of much that will change that...

It could take days, if not weeks, to learn that info, if ever. The media is not going to hold a story just to satisfy one small group's demands for extra info.

i agree, however, print and media don't mind running stories with little to no facts as long as it supports their agenda.
