Who here has rebuilt an engine?

Getting ready to tackle the rebuilding of a Durango 4.7. Never done this before.

Literally going to start out by clearing the garage so we can get the Durango in it.

My son just turned 18, so we're making it a father/son project. I know a little about cars, he knows nothing. So this is the time to start teaching.

WML/FML.

I rebuilt a Pontiac 428 and a 400 in high school. I still have the 428, it needs to be put back together.

I thought you were a mechanic...

I've never done it, but I wouldn't be scared to do it and I'm just a shade tree mechanic. The mechanics I've met don't come across as the brightest bulbs in the bunch. If you can follow directions and have the correct tools I'd imagine it isn't that hard to do.

In terms of rebuilding I assume you are going to get the machine shop to shave down the head. If you are installing new pistons I assume the block will be sent to a shop to have everything bored out. I'd imagine just about everything else can be done in your garage.

I'm in IT. But I've taken to doing most repairs on my cars since the advent of youtube videos making me look like a hero.

That's exactly the plan.

I've done several big block Chevys with help in the day but that Durango ignition and electrical is way more complicated? I'd have a back up plan and what is wrong with the motor in it?
Need good. Tools and several specialty tools like ring compressors, torque wrench, Better have a manual as well. I don't know???

when the oil pump went out in my '71 cuda i had to take it apart.. it was a much bigger project than i thought..

i decided to take it out with a cherry picker instead of putting it a lift a dropping out the k-frame.. took me a while, some help and busted off some paint
inste
i had a friend who is a hemi expert help me out, long story short.. i was running a V7 instead of a V8, had to replace oil pump and the engine builder had to wrong keyweight in

getting ready to drop it back in the next few weeks.. been over a year since i drove it.. can't wait

pic for reference

That's so beautiful.

The key to rebuilding an engine is to keep every damn nut and bolt labeled so you will know exactly where it goes when you put it back together. Also, have a budget, then multiply it be 2.

my organization system is crazy, i took out every nut and bold and then ordered the same exact ones in black oxide, gonna put the black oxide ones back and save the originals..

also, i spent a shite ton getting numerous parts powder coated.. was worth it though

i won't be of any assistance,,, i had parts left over from every swing set i ever put together.

could be because i always started and finished, "mostly", the night before and George Dickel and mosquitoes never seemed to want to help.

in fact, now that i'm thinking back on it,,, i had parts left over from every birthday and sanny clawz project i ever attempted to put together..

i always figured that as long as i had plenty of battrees and enough wire, i could get something to move, usually something did..

jeaux, on second thought, you need my help?

It's got the knocks bad.

Backstory: It's a 2005 we bought with 115k on it. I don't know how often I changed the oil and I'm generally pretty good with it, but at 165k the oil light comes on.

So I tell my 18yo, here's the credit card, get to a 5 minute change today and get new oil and filter.

He can't find the 5 minute oil place, pisses and moans and pitches a fit. 2 days later the light comes on again and the thing shuts down. Now it's got the loud knock.

ETA: I know we'll have to buy some special tools.. been reading up on some durango sites about the process.
