"Invasive" Species. Are they so bad?

That breathing fish in NY, pythons in the Everglades, emerald ash borer, ect. Man has moved species' outside of their "natural" environment since the beginning. (Noah, anyone?)

Rather than spend so much time, money and worry, why not just let them be? Allow a new equilibrium to be established. If Dutch Elm Disease kills all the elm trees, do you think forests would turn baren? No, some other tree would fill in.

Because people only believe in "survival of the fittest" if it's cute. That snake head fish is screwed.

I just recently learned that fire ants aren't native to LA and came up on a ship from south america in the 30's.

You mention Noah and then try to bring in a bastardized idea of evolutions.

Nice job. That's a new level of stupid.

I imagine that's exactly what the local species would want. But...

quote:

Man has moved species' outside of their "natural" environment

So...why can't we just let them be beforehand? Why wait till we fubar the local species before going with the hands off approach?

it's like breaking a componenent of an engine (i.e. ecosystem) and "just letting it be". That should work out well, right?

I was joking about the Noah thing. But I'll stand behind the rest of what I said.
