About 3-4 weeks ago I placed St Aug sod down a badly barren patch along my driveway. The picture above was taken after the work was complete.

I water for 15 min twice a day with a fan sprinkler, and the grass is now a healthy bright green. I know I need to start to water heavier and less frequently to promote deeper root growth.

Any advice on watering length and frequency? Perhaps 1 he a day 30 min 3x per week?

Also, any idea on how long it will take for the runners to start filling in? I haven't had to mow it yet so I'm assuming it is still establishing its roots.

Considering the technique is called checkerboarding I don't really mind the children's game reference.

Checkerboard rather than just buy 15 more squares to have it covered? You also have to make it level with your existing grass or it always look like crap

Can you still pull the squares up easily? We recommended the first couple days all the water you could afford to put on it. For two weeks just keep it slightly damp underneath. After that go to an every other day, about 30 minutes a day.

It's gonna take a couple growing seasons (years) for that to truly grow in so it doesn't look patchy. By the end of the summer you might have some runners touching each other. You'll probably have some weeds fill in between until the st aug can cover it all.

That's not checkerboarding. That's scattering. you should have spent the extra $15-20 and filled the gaps. In fact, you should still do it.

Everything I read recommending doing that with St Aug. I don't disagree that it looks a bit silly right now. FWIW I'm on a budget, and I had to lay a bunch along the street as well.

I can't pull more than the very edge up without ripping roots. I feel like it is time to change up the watering.

You shouldn't checkerboard anything.

Hey Cdawg, can I broadcast some Bermuda seeds in some bare spots in my yard right now and expect to see some results? Or will I be pissing in the wind?

Take a 5x5 inch square from your neighbors grass each night. In a week or two, your yard should be filled in.

Like other people said I would fork up the extra $$$ and fill it in. If you really want to save money I'd cut that sod up and make plugs. St. Aug is hearty and aggressive and will fill in with plugs very quickly.

I'd rake it to break the ground a little bit and then sprinkle them shits and water. We're still having "cooler" than normal weather but it is still ok. Bermuda is easy.

Dude, get one of these Hula Hoe and cut some strips from around your yard and lay in those gaps. They'll run together in a month or two if you take care of it.

That's a myth.

Don't let it wilt and you'll be fine.

St Aug will spread 3' in one summer. In Baton Rouge area. Further north it may be less.
