Erxleben

quote:

In Erxleben's first NFL game, on September 2, 1979, the Saints and the archrival Atlanta Falcons went into overtime with the score 34-34. Midway through overtime, a snap went over Erxleben's head and rolled to the goal line. Erxleben picked the ball up and made a hurried chest pass. The pass was intercepted by Atlanta's James Mayberry at the 6-yard line, and he trotted into the end zone for a touchdown and a 40-34 Falcon victory. New Orleans finished the year at 8-8, one game behind the Los Angeles Rams, who won the division and played in Super Bowl XIV.

In the 1980 season opener, Erxleben missed a game-tying field goal attempt in a 26-23 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, a team that had won four games over the previous two seasons. The loss was the first of 14 consecutive defeats for the Saints, who ended the year 1-15.

The Saints released him in 1983. After four years out of football, he attempted a comeback with the Detroit Lions, but retired for good in 1988.

Exactly.

Erxleban did literally nothing. He was a disaster.

And now he's going to jail for the umpteenth time.

Erxleban was unquestionably the worst pick and biggest bust. What makes Sullivan more painful was mostly the cap implications and money he got paid from the draft.

At least Erxleben made a contribution to the team for a few years.

The guy is a dirt bag. I hope he dies in prison and his son gets run over by a punt returner.

Erxleben was not a horrible punter. He averaged 43 yards in 1982. He was better than, say, Klaus Wilmsmeyer. That's not saying much, but that's saying something.

I can definitely see Russell Erxleben challenging for the top spot, although Sullivan was drafted higher in the 1st round.
Erxleben is the worst 1st rounder period.

Vaughn Dunbar

Actually had one good year once he got on the field. The team as a whole fell apart after that year though.

Erxleben played in the NFL for 6 season. Made 3 FGs and punted the ball 280 times. That's something too i guess

I never said he did nothing. He actually made 4 field goals. 7 XPs and completed two passes in which one was for a TD.

And he really only played four seasons, playing 1 game doesn't count as a season.

Also, DTs have a high bust rate, so its really not that big of a thing. I know it is to us, but league wide, its not.

Erxleban definitely stands out.

There are always 1st round busts that most people thought would produce.

When you pick someone in the first that makes everyone scratch their head (kicker), and they don't do anything, it's compounded. To me, that makes Erxleben #1..........with a horrible name.

Okay, so we're pretty much down to Russell Erxleben vs. Johnathan Sullivan. The majority so far seem to view Erxleben as the worst of all time. I can definitely see the points that make Erxleben the worst of all time. Now, even though it's rare, it's not the worst thing in the world to draft a kicker in the 1st round. Sebastian Janikowski was drafted in the 1st round by Oakland, and he's had a great career with them, but I guess he's the exception lol.

It's a question of value

You can get a decent kicker w/ a UFA. 1st rd is your one chance for a star every-down player

It's wiki, but his page said the Saints wanted to fill two roster spots with that pick, and I guess that's where they saw the value.

Still dumb.
