Sounds like Seattle and Sheppard's agent had already assumed he wouldn't get drafted and worked out the details of his UDFA agreement before the draft was finished, but didn't actually sign it until the last name was called and they were certain. Sheppard probably didn't realize or didn't bother to specify that the actual signing didn't occur until the draft was over.

I'm speculating totally, of course, but it's the most plausible explanation to me. It seems really silly that an organization like the Seahawks would be ignorant enough to do something that stupid for no reason. I mean, it's not like there was some huge race to get him signed before all those other teams that were so desperate to get him that they'd just passed on him 7 times.

Seriously, guys, we're dealing with a savant here. As such, I must concede that Les Miles is a terrible coach and Russell Shepard would have been a first string All-American if he had played QB for UTEP.

Philly, not Seattle. That said, I don't think they are even supposed to make contact until after the draft has ended. Either way, Shepard never should have opened his mouth about it. Even if it isn't a punishable violation, it still looks unprofessional and unethical. Had he said nothing, the Eagles wouldn't have to answer questions about it, but he couldn't keep his mouth shut.

If you think I just misused the word savant, you have already dropped below the 99th percentile.

ETA - Feel free to use Google. Type the word "Savant" in and hit the "Google Search" button.

I agree. Dude has a cannon for an arm and his accuracy puts him in the top 5 in college football easily. Miles just didn't play him at the qb position because he wanted shitty qb play for 4 years. It was a conspiracy.

He mis-stated the facts which did make himself look better in the eyes of the fan. Only a stupid & immature local radio host would escalate this as some sort of 'violation'. Come on, man. It is disgusting that we've become a TMZ nation. Get a grip people.

I do love Shep. He may not have been the best player on the team but he has always been a great 'team' player! i think he makes the team!

bullshite. He either lied, or he didn't. To say you signed a contract before the draft was over might be stretching the truth, but saying he "removed himself from the draft board" confirms it. Either he lied, or the Eagles did something wrong. Period.

If signing a player before the draft is over is against the rules, then its against the rules. If Shepard is telling people the team that signed him knowingly broke the rules, what does that say?

I'm not a big fan of Mascona either, but are we just blaming him now since we can't pin this on Les? Sooner or later we've got to put the blame on the individual?????
