A friend of mine posted this on facebook earlier. He was referencing Up on Cripple Creek by The Band.

It reminded me of a story I heard about the origin of the song. Supposedly Cripple Creek is what they used to call an area around south lake charles because Sheriff Ham Reid (allegedly) would tax cocaine smugglers to use his roadways. If he caught someone running coke who had not payed the tax he would beat them with his night stick, hence Cripple Creek.

I have read origin stories on the internets but there is no mention of this. Any old schooler from around the area who can validate this?
