This board is obviously a haven for knowledgeable football people. Please explain to me, in detail, how the moves that have occurred this off season will improve our defense and help us win the division and compete with San Fran, Seattle, and Green bay for home field.

Because it is almost impossible for them to be as bad or worse.

Think about this. For them to be worse, they would have to be the worst defense in HISTORY. Let that sink in. Let it simmer.

The scheme will utilize the abilities of the players better.

So that should help.

I think we improved our roster with FA and the draft. We won't know for sure till the games start but like others have said we have nowhere to go but up

A new system and new DC which both cater to getting pressure on the quarterback (something that rarely occurred last year), a new corner that actually gives us 2 viable starting corners, a first round draft pick that hopefully can be an immediate contributor and can actually cover the slot. Also a system that allows players like Hicks and Galette who were great in the limited playing time to see a lot more action, and creating a suitable position for a tweener like Martez Wilson that naturally suits his size and speed.....

ETA: Getting rid of Shanle and Ellis = addition by subtraction.

As far as the 2nd part of your question, our offense will take care of the rest. Our defense just needs to go from Worst to average for us to compete with the teams you named.

3-4 defense gets more pressure on the QB, which makes the secondary look better, resulting in turnovers.

Why? 2 years ago we got close to homefield with a crappy D.

I swear you have had threads like this before, asking people to do work that you could do yourself. In detail.

#1: the 3-4 puts our best players on the field (Martez, Hicks, Gilette) to get pressure on the quarterback, something we rarely did last season.

#2: new DC that allows a more instinctive style of aggressive defensive attack instead of a scheme happy Spags defense that relied too much on a pass rush that never happened.

#3: new free agents at corner and the strength of the draft at linebacker and safety will upgrade us immediately.

Listen- we aren't going to be a top 5 defensive unit next year. but we don't have to be. Simply making small but significant adjustments and cracking the top 15 means we are instant super bowl contenders.

ETA: Damn it, Zoltan. Pretty much everything i said you already said.
