Now that the draft is over, any vet cap casualties? Day 1 LT starter?

We drafted a LT and that's good, not so sure Armstead can come in an be an immediate starter, not necessarily any better that Brown at the moment. That remains to be seen. I'm not so certain we have our starting LT on the roster yet. Cap space has got to be pretty tight at the moment, I'm sure Vacarro will be included in the top 51.

There are still some veterans out there at RT, Winston, Clabo (not sure if any of these can slide over), and LT older guy like McKinnie.

Winston and Clabo would probably command around 3-4 mill. McKinnie I'm sure a little less.

Now that we at least know a good idea of who we have for cheap, can we let anyone go to try and sign a more proven LT- if even for a year?
RT could surely use an upgrade over Strief, or at least sign a LT, and shift Brown back over to the right. (Harris also showed promise last year, and we don't know what we have in Marcel Jones yet)

Potential candidates to give the pink slips to: (unless there is still guaranteed money due to some of these guys like the Harper situation, then I believe these numbers are close to accurate)

Zach Strief- Cap hit $2.375 mill this year. Prorated bonus in total is only $500k. Cutting saves ~ $1.875 mill towards the cap

-Got to think we can bring in someone more athletic or get the same amount of production from one of the younger guys for cheaper.

Malcom Jenkins- Cap hit $4.032 mill this year. Bonus deducted for 2013 only, no 2014 bonus is $1.518 mill. Cutting saves ~2.5 mill towards the cap

- Really depends on how much Quddus develops, but with Vacarro coming in and his flexibility, it could mean Jenkins is out. Jury is still out obviously.

Will Smith- Cap hit $8.5 mill this year. I'm not sure how the math works on his deal, maybe a cap guru can help me out. I know his signing bonus at least the dead money is $6.7 mill. But he has a roster bonus for 2013 of $1 mill and a workout bonus of $150k. Same for 2014 (but I imagine that doesn't matter if he is cut before the new league year starts?) I believe cutting saves ~$1.8 mill towards the cap

- With Smith I'm not sure if we will give up on him for the "veteran leadership" and being a larger guy as a 3-4 end. But if it comes down to it, the signing of Jenkins may be his undoing giving Hicks the freedom to slide to the end and having cheaper options like Coleman, Broughton, maybe even Tom Johnson, etc.

Chris Ivory also saved us $2 million towards the cap.

Anyone else? Harper probably wouldn't be worth it, Vilma's restructure precludes it.

There is no point in having these conversations again because its almost certain all of these guys are on the roster come September. They restructure some of these guys and that wasn't for nothing... They have dead money invested and the only one to be dropped and make sense money wise is Jenkins...he isn't going anywhere just yet

Strief has only $500k in dead money. Like I said I doubt Smith goes, but that's a lot of money to save for a slow fat white guy who gave up a lot of pressures last year when there are better options for cheaper or it could be used elsewhere.

Signed his deal in 2011, so it should only be $250k, but the difference is pretty insignificant.

Doubt they can play LT, but either would be huge upgrades over Strief at a minimum cost (after cutting him) and I think the Saints have to be considering it.

I also think, at this point, the Ravens aren't interested in McKinie and that he'll cost dirt cheap.

Taking your word with the rest of the savings, I still don't see us cutting Jenkins. I'd prefer Seymour over Smith as a guy to move around both end positions, but I think Seymour is interested in coming back at a cheap price. Either way, if we cut Jenkins or Smith, I think we'd need someone in mind to replace them as would be the case with Strief/Winston/Clabo.

Smith will be on the roster. Payton loves him and is very loyal to him. He said outside of Brees, Smith was the player he missed talking to most during his suspension.

Strief has a slight chance of getting cut, if he gets outplayed by Harris AND Jones or some surprise rookie/FA pickup. He likely stays even if he gets beat out just as a backup.

Jenkins is the only one out of that group that cutting makes sense both money wise(I think he saves us the most out of everyone on the team, tied with 1 or 2 other) and because we have someone that could replace him and already have a legit backup in Leonhard.

Looking at the rest of the roster, I see no other serious candidates as the rest either save very little or would actually cost cap room to cut(PRob for instance).

I'm right there with you. We had no shot at a top 3 LT in the draft and no cap room to sign a legit one in FA.

Just have to hope someone steps up. This is my biggest red flag position by far.

bone, just my perception but it seems you take snipets or blurbs and extrapolate them to more than they are. Such as
quote:

to

I do think Smith will be around for his last hurrah here. At the same time I think we'll see an elevated degree of camp competition. We're not rebuilding but there is a degree of overall fresh approach by Payton having been away a year. Surprising cuts this year shouldn't be as much of a surprise. Smith, Vilma, Strief, and even others not on our radar could get axed.

I think our LT will come from our current stable of Brown, Smith, or Armstead. Should be a plain old fashioned competition. I think Armstead is the guy long term, just don't know if he'll be game ready by Week 1.

I see Jason Smith competing for & winning the RT position. If so, Strief will be cut & Marcel Jones will back Smith up.

LT - Charles Brown, Terron Armstead
RT - Jason Smith, Marcel Jones

Should be a good camp battle between all these guys

I doubt if they are starters: W Smith Vilma Strief and Jenkins. The comptition we have now may lead to some or all being cut.

Camp is gonna be like 06 all over again.

Best man wins.

agree, remember starting safety Dwight Smith cut early and swiftly? Remember a "Who?" player out of Hofstra booting a former WR 1st Rd pick down the road? Surprises will be no surprise.

It isn't just a blurb. He says stuff like that about Smith all the time. Just ask anyone with knowledge of their relationship.

If Smith gets cut I'd be extremely surprised. He said earlier this year that he'd hate to lose him but he did understand the cap side of it. Once he took a cut he become a lock to make the team barring becoming so incompetent he'd make Sullivan look like an all pro. I don't see that happening.

I'd be more iffy on Vilma. We have a lot more LBs than DEs(especially since many of the tweeners we had won't be big enough to play end) and while I think he can transition, I think his size and diminishing physical skills make him a higher cut candidate than Smith.

I'm not saying there won't be surprises but I don't see Smith as one. And a lot of other starters will be impossible to cut due to them causing us to lose cap space if we do.

Maybe Strief and Vilma would be the most surprising. Jenkins is a candidate but that wouldn't surprise me. Harper is a slight possibility.
