Why was fighting in the past not looked down upon?

I'm am not trying to condone hill's actions, but I am very confused about the way the older generation reacts. They are the first ones to want Hill kicked off the team for being a thug, but they love to tell the glory day stories of how Andolsek and Cantrell used to beat the hell out of people in the bars. So we're they thugs too?
ETA: changed thread title because people kept assuming I was trying to talk bad about Andolsek and Cantrelle. I was simply using them as an example because I have heard fighting stories about them

Hell, Bill Elko was a bouncer at Murphy's at one time. This is nothing new, except for the media attention. If anything, it's quite a bit calmer than back in the day.

Cantrell played at least part of his high school football at LTI.

This is my point. Why are past players glorified for being tough and mean sons of bitches, while today's players are thugs for doing the same thing?

What about # 20 rolling gays downtown for fun?
Or whatisname stabbing a guy after the 76 Nebraska game ?
Or Ben McDonald acting like an arrogant arse all over campus.
And Andolsek was Legend for intimidating.
Not to mention my own college assholery.(Murphy's barfight).
It's ALWAYS been a part of campus life.
Sad but true.

Before anyone starts waxing nostalgic about the badass exploits of Andolsek and Cantrell, I'll save you the trouble with the fact that LSU basketball player Greg Cook (78-81) would have bitch slapped either one of them in front of their girlfriends.

Fact!

Was Art Cantrelle a thug - probably by today's definition, yes.
But things were just a lot different in the late '60s/ early '70s.

You don't frick with somebody with that kind of reach. There was a legendary fight in the Miss, State athletic dorm one time between baskeball players and football players. The hoopsters wrecked shite.

Generalize much? I'm 50 and I don't think Hill should be booted for a bar fight.

good friend of mine roomed with Andolsek at LSU, this guys pretty laid back himself, pitcher, so you know he doesn't mix it up much, I've never any stories like that from him, nor have I ever heard him say a bad word about him

I never heard anything about Andolsek off the field, but it was a little bit after my time. He was nasty on the field, though.

Yeah, I've never heard any Andolsek stories before.

P.S. -- The thing about basketball players beating up football players like Andolsek is ludicrous.

Dude did not usually look for fights, but was not afraid to mix it up either. Yes, he got in fights when he was at LSU. Not all were in Baton Rouge.
