The politics of Duck Dynasty

So, the culture in America is moving left. Yet I'm reading USA Today (a left wing rag) and they say DD is now the highest rated show on TV.

It's a right wing show. Everyone is white. The men work and the women raise the kids. They kill animals. They hate hippies. They hate the direction the country is going. Uncle Si killed people in Viet Nam. They love business and freedom. They hate game wardens (govt).

And it's on A.E. which is a left wing network. I'm having some cognitive dissonance. Can any of you sociologists help me out?

It's such a relief to see some normal people with well behaved kids on TV.

A large portion of America is happy to watch a real functional, loving family rather than the dysfunctional examples that reality TV has given them in past years.

Just another sign of the dumbing down of America.

I guess that's it.

There's no cursing, no people throwing shit, kids that say "yes sir" to their dads, no drastic amount of staged fight drama.

It's just a nice show to watch.

It's the same reason Fox News continues to do so well. When everything on tv is either not aimed towards the older, Rural, Conservative, Middle America crowd or is outright hostile to that demographic, then when a show comes along that aimed towards that, they have no choice but to watch.

I'm not business genius, but it seems pretty obvious that if CNN moved center right they would start to pick off a little bit of the Fox News audience and more of middle America.

It's a TV show. Most people don't look at the world through an ideological prism 24/7. Shocking, I know.

News flash. There are 100s of TV shows. Why is it No. 1 now?

Jase can deliver a deadpan one-liner, that is actually funny, far better than most of the professional "comedians" on The Comedy Channel !

The majority of "The American People" must identify with the Robertsons. I do.

Some clearly find it entertaining. Maybe others look at it as a freak show. I just wouldn't draw too many sociopolitical conclusions based on TV ratings.

I like DD. But COPS is the best there ever was or will be.

Valid, but I was talking more of the type of shows that have set characters and focus on a specific group of people (ie the Robertson's and not just duck call manufacturers) COPS focus on the general group of cops across the country.

It's just good, clean, simple entertainment.

Like a breath of fresh air compared to most of the rest of what is on TV.

I disagree. Do you remember Ozzie and Harriet? I thought that was the dumbest show on TV. Two people with their two boys doing nothing. But today it would be rare.

Then there was Father Knows Best. At least it had a lesson. Ozzie wasn't that smart. But the title was too paternalistic.

Then we got Andy Griffith. Wildly successful show just before cable. American values. Small town America.

DD is connecting with a niche.
