This is the kind of stuff that breaks my heart into pieces. Burying your own child is something I'll never get over.

Did they know there was an increased risk of it happening again?

Well I don't know much about that heart condition tbh. So I'm not even sure if it's a condition that a doctor could even say "yep, it's def genetic and there is a chance any future children could have it as well"

My father has a genetic condition and 2 of my siblings have the same condition(it is why they are mentally challenged). However much wasn't known about his condition when my parents were having children so it's not like a doctor even advised them against it. I've been told that if I have children I won't pass it on, but it def is something that makes me think twice about when thinking about having children.

re: Congrats to Respulica88 on the birth of his twin boys

Hello to all, I am actually up with Max(maxwell) right now. He's "grazing" and kind of restless. Trying to give Keri a break as she rests. Alarm is set for 4:30 am to go down and spend the morning with Preston. Both boys are doing well.

Preston indeed does have HLHS. He is on prostaglandins to keep his Ductus Arterioisus open which allows for his blood to flow to his extremities being he has an atretic aorta and aortic arch. Laymens terms - meds are allowing him to stay alive since he only has half a heart. Surgery is pencilled in for next Thursday but that can change in an instant. I was with my dad today with Preston when some baby coded on the Picu floor just down the way from Pres(ton). A humbling reminder that all things just don't go according to a plan or happen as you desire. I remember the late night phone calls when Alex coded and/or flat lined.

But so far so good. Preston and Maxwell are handsome baby boys, and in my opinion, looking a lot like their mother. Thank goodness. As far as genetics go, they will do a very comprehensive genetic test using blood from both baby boys, my wife, and myself. Perhaps my daughter will be examined genetically too to see if there is any potential traits possibly of being passed on. We hope the results of this bring " light " to the cause of our HLHS baby boys.

Thanks to all who have cared so tenderly, tirelessly and consistently for my family and me. I am truly amazed and much obliged. I look forward to updating you all and will try to post here as long as it stays relevant and will update as the surgery goes next Thursday. For all those interested.. They plan on doing the full stage 1 Norwood procedure. It will be the most difficult and demanding on baby Preston of the three required surgeries he will have.

I'm going to pray for Pres. Hope nothing drastic happens and everything can stay on schedule.

Good luck man. I'm sure Alex is looking over his lil bro Pres.

What is this Norwood procedure ?

re: Congrats to Respulica88 on the birth of his twin boys

The Norwood is the first of a three stage surgical process they do to make an HLHS persons physiology and anatomy capable of sustaining life. It's pretty difficult to describe without going into great detail but the first procedure is very key and serves as a bridge to the final product( the Glenn or stage two & the fontan or stage 3). There are multiple variations and steps within each procedure but essentially the end-goal is to make the baby's heart a two chambered pumping system with venous blood flowing passively to the said child's lungs.

There are about 1,000 factors that influence the outcome of these surgeries but overall success rate is very high considering the magnitude of difficulty and complexity of each presenting case. Alexander only made it through stage 2 or "The Glenn" before succumbing two complications due to his own anatomy.
