I have hunted with feeders my entire and never gave it much thought until a recent conversation with a hunter from Utah, where the use of feeders is illegal.

He argued that it is synonymous to cheating. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

My argument was if hunting is truly only about putting meat on the table, then why should it matter if bait is used? Wouldn't the use of food plots or doe estrus be similar, or is that also illegal in some states? The land I hunt on has no high fences, so it isn't like they are caged, tame animals.

Most of the big deer taken from the property have been nowhere near the feeder. They got big by being smart.

People that cant use feeders think that its one of the deals they see on TV where the feeder goes off and there's 20 deer standing by it

I have hunted by feeders on our property behind my house and never shot a deer that was eating from the feeder

I think it's pretty boring to hunt over a feeder, but I don't consider it cheating. Just not really my thing.

I only use feed when trying to get meat ( shoot a for or hog). Never have baited with the thought that a trophy was going to come in.

from state where it is illegal it is cheating legally and ethically becasue all of the deer in the area are drawn to the one illegal feeder. if you have one you are at a major advantage.

In a state where feeders are legal it is not cheating either legally or ethically because all of the deer in the area are drawn to properties with feeders. If you dont have one you are at a major disadvantage.

hunting over a feeder for deer is less appealing than scouting a pass, trail, or rub line and finding the right tree and using the right wind to kill that big one. That being said that location is usually set up either on an entrance or exit trail from bedding areas to feeding areas, or is close to a big white acron patch or persimmon patch.

the same thing applies to food plots.

And if you want to kill pigs feeders are the way to go unless you have dogs or you are spotlighting.

I will put a feed site on my lease, but I dont hunt it. Just like my deer corn fed and fat when I kill. I hunt buck sign and heavy game trails. I look for edges and pinch points. Hunt edges of thickets and just outside the perimeter of clearing for bucks skirting for does

My opinion is they keep the deer around so your chances are better to see deer.

But mature bucks seem to pattern their visits to late night only. Very seldom going to see a nice buck eating from a trough in the middle of the day

I did not read others responses because I am sure they will upset me and I am sure that this will upset some too. We use feeders at our camp. We use them to bring in the does at the beginning of the season so that we can get a good freezer of meat early. Once rut starts, only the womenz hunt over the feeders in hopes of getting a good size doe or hopefully a horny buck. Our feeders are on a pipeline and several fields that are over 50 acres so they can hunt a good bit later than the woods hunters.

Summary: we use feeders to fill the freezer and let women get a kill.

i think it's boring, but i don't have any ethical problems with it. i do think it takes a lot less skill to kill a deer while hunting over a feeder.

I think it's complete BS and the rest of you should stop doing it.
