I am not too safe of a driver with the tiller arm surface drives, what do you guys think of the ones with the steering wheels?

I plan on putting one in my boat next year. Comfort is nice. Only real negative is that when in some thick stuff, its harder to steer and get out of stuff.

Depends what you tryna do with the boat. For me a boat with a service drive would need as much open space as possible so I wouldn't want a steering wheel/console.

One negative I could see is more weight with console and steering assembly. May not be enough to matter.

On my lease, gettin there is half the fun. And look out in the fog and the rain. Hold my coffee and watch this shite.

Got both, tiller WAY better when you're in a bind. I've broken two helm assemblies, trying to get thru some thick stuff. If you're going to be traveling long distance, steering is the way to go. Friend just put hydraulic steering on his, I hear good things.

Mine is my primary boat. So sometimes I will travel a long distance to fish.

Weight of console is not much so it wont make a huge difference.

Look forward to chasing some reds in a month or so in the marsh.

Its all in what u gonna do primarily. I have a tiller and it will ware your arm out, but you can turn MUCH tighter and better control in the muck. Buddy has steering wheel, long runs down a bayou or open water it is nice

I have had both. Single with tiller and a dual with Hydro steering. With steering you have to turn the wheel about a hundred times to do a circle. Keep this in mind and get a steering knob. I loved both but just for hunting go tiller.

Inboard mud boats have this setup so can't see why it wouldn't work with a surface drive.

Well tiller steering is not very safe option for me, I can do it, it's just kinda sketch.

I figure if I get stuck bad I can push pole out like I used to do in a 16 flat with a 25 hp 2stroke in myrtle grove. It ain't pretty or easy but it will get you home.

It will make me learn the area better and think more about where I go which I don't mind.

I was also thinking I could use it for fishing, ideally I could leave it in Delacroix since I already have a place to stay.

Attempting to find something to hunt near there as well...

If you want a steering wheel go with hydraulic. I could let go of the wheel and it wouldn't move with two 36hp prodrives on the boat. Besides losing space that was only negative for me since I have about 30 minute ride to get to my holes.

The wheel is fine. I wasn't too sure when we got ours but having it is nice cause it essentially makes the boat more versatile. It only sucks when you have to pick up the motor to clear the grass and when/if you get stuck.
