5 straight years we have picked a Defender with our first pick in the draft

And we had the worst Defense in NFL history. That is the longest streak in the NFL.

I'm sure everyone knew that, and yes I saw it on SR and thought it worth posting here.

But for everyone screaming that we must pick D in the first round...it doesn't mean that we will get successful on D because of it. The NFL Draft is such a crapshoot that I've learned to put it into perspective. We must pick the best player available. I hope that guy is a defender, but the team has two sides of the ball. I'm not going to get bent out of shape on any pick, as long as the Saints feel its a guy that can help them.

exactly...just get someone who in 4 years is actually playing like a high first rounder would be expected to be playing

Exactly. Too often people just think about "plugging holes". Well we picked that OLB in the first round... problem solved! We're good this year!

That's just not the way it works. Some guys take years to develop, some don't. Some don't develop at all, some become All-Pros on their second team. It happens.

You really want to upgrade one thing in the draft: TALENT. Who will still be there in a few years contributing? How long is the learning curve? What is the ceiling and floor?

I agree with all of that, HOWEVER, like chad said we have ha 3 different coordinators. Also, I don't think any of those guys was expected to be a difference maker. Ellis maybe, and he was just a bust. Jenkins was supposedly best corner available. Robinson was bottom of round one so they thought they were getting bpa. Jordan will be good I think.

IMO, guys like star, jones, Mingo, etc can be true difference makers

I think it's four years.
2006 Reggie Bush at 2
2007 Robert Meachem at 27
2008 Sed Ellis at 7
2009 M. Jenkins at 14
2010 PRob at 32
2011 Cam Jordan at 24

2001 Mark Ingram at 28

That being said, none of our 1st rounders have set the world on fire.

It doesn't help that we are an offensive team and are on our thrid coordinator in three years.

This I can agree with.

I think that's misleading. I don't think there's any way you can project past draft picks to this year. How can you explain years past picks explaining the success or failure of this year?

You are correct. I misinterpreted.

Its 5 straight years where our 1st pick was a Defender. Hicks last year.

My bad, I'll edit.

Not to mention, our last two 1st round picks are the future of our offense/defense. Ingram will be a staple in this offense and Jordan is one of the main reason for the move to the 34.

Not to mention losing most of our coaching last year. I just think this is a huge stretch to try and fit your point.

My only point was to posters that scream and cry if anyone brings up Offense at all. YOU MUST PICK A DEFENDER!!! WILL HEAR NOTHING ELSE!!!!

I prefer Defense. But its just more complex than that managing a roster.

Which is why I feel it's so ridiculous when people think we can just harvest mid round gems on the O line, or fine playmaker at wr anytime we want them.

I think this is what it comes down to. You have to find the balance of the BPA and the needs you have.

I mean you can complain about everyone screaming for a defensive player, but we had worst defense in history last year man. How is that going to change with the same players?
In 2012 everyone thought, oh yeah, with Spags new scheme will just play to the players strengths and change the scheme up. Well look what happened?

Take a look at the Texans in 2011. They draft JJ Watt and bring in Wade as D Coordinator and they're a top 5 defense. All Bc they had a defensive playmaker you have to account for every single snap. Guess what? You're not going to find that guy in the 3rd round.

I posted a thread yesterday about all the picks we have had under Payton. LINK

What stood out to me the most is we have drafted 7 Corners out of the 21 defensive players we have selected. Amazing other than Porter none have yet emerged as a solid option. ( I know Robinson has shown flashes, and White still has to develop, but White was also listed as a safety when we drafted him, so he's not even part of the 7)

Does Meachem have more forced fumbles and recoveries than Ellis?

Again, I prefer Defense. I've never said I wouldn't pick a defender if he's the best option there.

Your argument is that "we spend first round picks on defense all the time and our defense still sucks. Therefore, if we don't spend a first pick on defense, our defense will improve."

No, we need talent.
