I just moved to jackson and claimed residency for my job purposes. I'm from louisiana but went to OM for 4yrs. I'm wanting to take a ccw class to get my permit but some people told me that I must be a resident for as least 12months. Is this true? Thanks in advance

not sure but do know there is no ccw class here. just get fingerprinted and pay the $132 and wait 45 days for license. we do have an enhanced carry class though i would advise getting. that way you have no restrictions except federal buildings

12 months is correct, but could be waived if you a permit in another state. No class is required unless you want the enhanced permit.

Here is the text of the Mississippi Law:

House Bill No. 2862 Section 2

(2) The Department of Public Safety shall issue a license if the applicant:

(a) Is a resident of the state and has been a resident for twelve (12) months or longer immediately preceding the filing of the application. However, this residency requirement may be waived, provided the applicant possesses a valid permit from another state, is active military personnel stationed in Mississippi or is a retired law enforcement officer establishing residency in the state...

Must be resident for 12 months, and there is no class, just be sure you have filled out all the forms before you go.

I would love to be able to carry at school. The damn place is an active target gallery for psychopaths as has been proven over and over again.

The enhanced carry if I remember correctly really doesn't allow you to carry in that many more places. It seemed kind of worthless to me.

Haven't carried in a while and let mine lapse but just bought a LC9 with the Crimson Trace (wife got one as well) so we went down to the sheriff's office here in Mobile and were out within 15 minutes with the full hard plastic picture ID's for like $25 each. In today's environment I was expecting lots of change but it was great!

I actually did a speech on CC on campuses about a year ago and I said the MS is the perfect model example for a couple of reasons:

1. It's in the south (and SEC) and our culture/area are similar.

2. Concealed carry has been legal EVERYWHERE else for a long time with no issues in LA. And in MS, the enhanced has been around a while with no issues.

3. If people are afraid of people making bad decisions carrying concealed on a campus (irrational, but fears nonetheless) the class for the enhanced carry directly addresses these issues.

I think it would be perfect in LA. But I doubt it will get through for a long time, and definitely not in my 4 short weeks I have left there.
