Settle This Argument--Is Iced Tea just Flavored Water?

I had this argument with a friend last night. I've basically cut out soda from my diet(even diet soda)and have been drinking a lot of water. Sometimes I get bored of just plain water and drink iced tea(especially in restaurants) or add Mio liquid water enhanceers to my water. My friend says drinking iced tea or water with an added substance detracts from water's health benefits.
Basically he told me that if I was required to drink 64oz of water a day and I drank 64oz of iced tea it would not be the same. I'm no chemist, but isn't tea or a mio flavored water, just flavored water? So still water, just flavored and therefore would still fulfill the requirements of drinking 64oz of water?
It's not like adding a tea bag and brewing changes the chemical composition of h2o.
Who is right?

By your logic, isn't everything just flavored water?

Well, depending on how caffeinated your tea is, it could act as a diuretic and not hydrate you as well as the same amount of plain old water.

he is right. Tea has caffiene (which dehydrates you) and the mio has artificial crap in it

You're going to have serious kidney problems if you drink 64oz of tea a day.

How is vodka or orange juice flavored water?
The caffeine and dehydration thing makes sense now that someone has said it. So I get why tea or coffee, even though their technically just flavored water, wouldn't be the same as just drinking plain water.

No. And it's a diuretic.

Not going to drink that much tea or water. It was a hypothetical. Isn't that how much water doctor's say one should drink a day or something close to that?

....you drink 64oz of tea a day.

I believe you are correct. For example, suppose you drank the 64 oz of water, then ate the tea leaves. Would that make the 64 oz of water somehow less effective?
The body doesn't give a poop how it's mixed, it'll separate the water from the tea anyway.
