Are those who defend the CSA's "right to secede" hypocrites

for reciting the Pledge of Allegiance?

Are Southerners who fly confederate flags from their trailer porches hypocrites for shouting "USA! USA! USA!" at sporting events featuring American teams?

So, it's meaningless except as some feel-good group exercise?

to me. i'm just one man

and i don't see where in the constitution it says states can't secede. as with many things in life, war settled the debate

I don't think hypocrite is the right descriptive term. Liars, maybe?

I could recite the pledge all day and if I didn't truly believe in it, then it really means nothing.

we're also assuming people can't change their minds/pledges

True. Also, take into account that if saying the pledge once resulted in your allegiance being set in stone, why do we repeat it on multiple occasions?

So, the bombs going off weren't because of white racist tea baggers. Thanks for posting.

This is a completely separate question than what you posed in your OP.

Not really part of my question, but I found this quote interesting... from John Stuart Mill's "Contest in America", in which he addresses the issue of England allying with the Confederates (which had been a very strong possibility owing to some perceived grievances with the North, and because some Englishmen believed that since the Confederates had a right to secede the UK should avail itself of the cotton opportunities) having been defeated in Parliament:

quote:

Every reader of a newspaper, to the farthest ends of the earth, would have believed and remembered one thing only—that at the critical juncture which was to decide whether slavery should blaze up afresh with increased vigor or be trodden out at the moment of conflict between the good and the evil spirit—at the dawn of a hope that the demon might now at last be chained and flung into the pit, England stepped in, and, for the sake of cotton, made Satan victorious.

True, but I wanted to kill two birds with one stone.

i think they had legit grievances against the US (the "north")

it was only 50 odd years since they had fought the US. in ancient terms that's like a weekend bender

It's appears Rex has received new orders to deflect attention away from the recent attacks by starting asinine threads on the Internet. A task he is well suited for.
