People always look so disappointed when I tell them I got her from a breeder in Arkansas

I just don't get the animosity towards breeders. Breeders are not puppy mills, they are not pet stores. I would like to think if someone was going to purchase a dog from a breeder they would at least go scope out the where it was born and the conditions it was being bred in not to mention the people doing the breeding. That's just me though.

the term "rescue" is self-righteous hyperbole

This. I find that people who use the term "adopted" rather than "rescued" are a whole lot more tolerable in general. Of course either term is used more or less to stroke the owners ego.

I could easily say that I "adopted" my dog, that is, I made a legal transaction that put the dog in my care, then took it from the previous guardian, brought it home and raised it as a part of my family. Of course if I said that people would get bent out of shape because it isn't "adopting" unless it came from a shelter.

Don't buy a dog from a breeder if you are going to get your panties in a bunch every time someone judges you.

Yeah, well don't get your panties in a bunch about a guy that got his panties in a bunch because he was being judged by somebody who got his panties in a bunch.

When people ask me where I got her the moment the word breeder leaves my mouth the disgust is obvious
Then quit using the term "breeder." When they ask where you got it, just say, "A guy from *insert town here*.

It's as close as I could come up with to show that for some people a free dog may be fine for some but nothing wrong with those who want more/pay for it.

Maybe I missed the mark.

Please do your research and stay away from American blood lines. They're bred for show, not sport.

I remember reading something about that. Other side of the family has some aussie and german sheps and I fell in love with their german sheps.

I'm going to name it Rommel.

Just make sure you really research the breeder, their blood lines, breeding methods, etc. Look into Schutzund and Hip ratings, temperament, genealogy. If you're going to go for a purebred GSD then it's going to cost you, so don't skimp out and go for a certain breeder just because they're cheaper. Also, these dogs require physical and intellectual stimulation. They enjoy training as they're high-drive dogs and need to have a purpose. They're a working breed, after all.

My first was named Grizz, but my current GSD is named Panzer.
