I just started playing but I am confused by something.

How is this a free game?

I haven't read up on anything. I just heard about it here in another thread and started playing. Id this basically a demo of an uncompleted game or is the game as big as say a diablo?

I only played the Diablo III demo but the graphics seem comparable to DIII.

So far so good. Although as I said, all I've done is kill the hill giant and get to the first town.

oh and the game did crash on me when I was messing around with the quality settings.

I'll check back Friday when I've had more time to play.

The TF2 hat business model.

Though from what I've heard, some of the pay features are a bit more useful than hats, but don't provide a competitive advantage over others.

I believe you can buy extra bank space and stuff like that. Not sure what else.

Yeah, I see it has microtransactions but the few I've noticed seem more cosmetic. Admittedly I haven't checked it out much. Heck, it just finished downloading about 30 minutes ago.

Pretty fun game. A bit repetitive.

Its free cause its in beta. But it will always be free

The new business model basically is offer games for free and convince people to buy stuff, aka donate, if they like it.

Some games are just cosmetic enhancements and fun stuff. Some games charge for more relevant enhancements

Also, the last act isn't complete iirc

Free 2 Play games stand to make more money than a game you pay for one time if they can get the formula correct.

I want to say if you bought everything in Planetside 2 it would cost you like $400.

I may be wrong on that figure but the good F2P games aren't hurting.

Yeah but the ones that seem to be successful give decent advantages as the microtransactions.

Seems like exile just adds colors and effects. Although I didn't look at the whole list.

I know they got a good bit of money for people paying to support the game when it was in closed beta. The diamond level people paid $1000 a pop. I did pay to get into the beta just becuase I wanted to help fund the studio. Once I saw the passive grid I def wanted to be a part of making sure the game got made.

Now its just open "beta" until they finish the game from my understanding. But they wont ever do a characters reset again they have said.

There are a lot of people with too much free time and too much money. I could think of better things to spend my money on, but they can spend theirs on whatever they want.

League of Legends and TF2 both have a booming business based upon microtransactions for cosmetic benefits.

Yeah, if you go to Twitch you'll see just how strong the LoL community really is.

It has surpassed Starcraft as far as viewership is concerned.

Thread hijack, how does it feel going to Auburn? I use to go there all the time when I played at Southern Union.

What's interesting about these free games is that they can make a lot of money off of a small percentage of players. I read a news article and the developers call these players "whales". They talk to some people who were spending 10,000 plus on games. There are people out there with a lot of disposable income and a lot of free time.

Yeah, when I played Evony, there were knuckleheads spending $100.00s to $1,000.00s every month.

At least that money went to game advantages, but the advantages were not so huge that I would ever have thought to drop a dime on the game.

For a free game, this is a pretty solid hack N slash.

Having said, that, I am growing a bit weary now that I have entered Act III.

Not the games fault, I just don't enjoy hack n slash the way I used to.

Must piss Blizzard off. In some areas, this game is a total copy of Diablo. Heck, they even have the same DARKNESS over the land plot.

A bit too easy on the first difficulty level.

Still liking the game.

Still shocked the game is free. Graphics in Act III appear to better although I could be imagining that.

One thing I hate about these games is I never can really figure out which weapons I should be keeping.

It does aggravate me a bit that previously cleared areas automatically reload after 10 minutes.

I hate clearing an area, only to come back and have the geography changed and monsters reloaded.

I haven't got a character to the endgame maps yet but I've enjoyed the hell out of path of exile.

Except yesterday when my wife asked me to help cook dinner and my hardcore FP shadow died while I was afk

If you want someone to play with on a new hard core character though, let me know. I might start up a new one tonight.

Who here has played this?

I really am confused that they haven't been sued by Blizzard.

They made some changes but almost everything is diabloesque.

Heck some of the monsters are the same. Those pain in the balls necromancers that raise the big pile of skeletons you just killed. That is right out of Diablo.

Did members of the Diablo team make Paths?

Another question. How does this game compare with Torchlight?
