Edge did an interview with Michael Denny who is a VP from Sony's Worldwide Studios.

quote:

What lessons have you learned from the PS3 price? Will PS4 launch with a more competitive price point?

There’s plenty of time, we’ve got lots of information yet to give out on PlayStation 4. The initial announcement phase that we’re in now is just to explain the vision to everybody. Part of that vision is we have created a console absolutely focused on gamers – and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well. I think to some extent I can ask you to draw your own conclusions.

Full interview about the PS4 here.

You'd have to think this means a price tag of $400-450.

$399 most likely, been the rumor since about November and everything since hints that's what it will be.

Will probably be 399 for the base and 499 for the "upgraded with goodies" package.

I havent had anything Sony since a PS2, but with all of the recent things coming out, I might be leaning PS4. Xbox really needs to up their game.

Xbox is getting really less desirable because of the rumors of it always being online. This is not just based off that one clown going off on twitter there has been other places where it has hinted that xbox will always be online. Then Ubisoft came out and said players are ready for an always online system. LINK I think PS4 is going to blow xbox out of the water and I'm not sure if nintendo can survive to compete against PS4 and Xbox and might have to resort to just making games like Sega.

I'm speaking strictly for consoles not handhelds where nintendo thrives right now.

Durango not “always online,”

People just need to chill and wait for something official from Xbox

As far as Ubisoft saying that, they tried DRM first before EA ever thought about it and failed. They caved to the pressure and removed DRM from Uplay but that doesn't mean it's still not in the back of their minds. They want it to control piracy more for PCs like every other dev does. That has no bearing on what Xbox may or may not do.

Which is why they have to step up their game. The longer they wait, the less time there is for excitement and hype to build along with less time for tweaks and adjustments to feedback pre-launch.

Sounds like they're trying to differentiate themselves from the xbox rumors about it being a home entertainment center first and game player second.

Meaning not just hardcore gamers. Sounds like they want to do a lot more casual stuff and make more use of the Move.

PS1 was $299.
PS2 was $299.
Both systems thrived from day 1.
PS3 was $499 and $599. Really struggled until the $299 drop.
Make it $299!

How awesome would it be if Nintendo stopped making consoles and kept making Zelda games for other platforms. I know it's a pipe dream.

In a roundtable conversation with journalists, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios noted that PS3 games of both the retail and downloadable variety will not be compatible with PlayStation 4, at least not natively. In other words, your PS3 discs won’t work in the new console nor will the games you downloaded.

Maybe in price, but it doesn't appeal to consumers in "the broadest sense".
