re: The 5th pick scenario

From Draftexpress:

quote:

Burke is undersized for a point guard, standing around six feet with a relatively narrow frame, but as mentioned in the past, he compensates for that somewhat with an extremely long 6-5 wingspan. He is a solid athlete as well, quick in the open floor and extremely shifty in the half-court, although not terribly explosive around the basket.

The quickness bit is being exaggerated in this thread. The guy isn't CP3, but he's far from Greivis.

I've read multiple places that there is concern

If they were actually scared he wouldn't be at the top of all the draft boards still.

Are there concerns about Noel's health? Absolutely. This is his second significant leg injury (he broke his leg as a sophomore in high school), but there's not much of an alternative.

"Broken leg and ACL, no offense and 215 pounds," one NBA general manager told CBSSports.com. "And he still may be, and should be, the No. 1 pick."

Hello, Greg Oden. Scouts and GMs in the NBA have a long history of looking past bad knees in big guys with high ceilings.

Again, you're passing your own opinion on as absolutes. You have no idea how he his on the ball pressure will be with 1) Monty as his coach 2) He's not playing 40+ minutes a game and 3) In a totally different environment than the UM system.

Look at someone's defense in college almost always translates to how well they will play defense in the NBA.

Unless they have the build and athleticism that can translate with coaching. Burke doesn't seem to have that.

Good. Then you must have seen on Draft Express that he is fairly poor when rotating in defense and that he doesn't pressure the ball well.

Greg Oden was a bit more complicated than a broken leg 3 years ago and a torn ACL.

Since the Blazers won't be drafting him, I think Noel is in the clear

Perry Jones and Sullinger's injury potential dropped them to the 20s and both guys were considered top 3 picks at points in their college careers. It's not like GMs actively ignore injuries, it's a risk calculation and it sounds like most GMs would be willing to bet their jobs on the fact that Noel knees won't keep him from reaching his potential.

"wasting" a 5th pick on him.

Also never said we would be wasting a pick. I said Monty and Dell won't draft him because it goes against what they have been saying. We will trade out or down if Dipo or Porter isn't there and someone doesn't slide. Or go a different direction.

I also love the, "oh we'll trade down if so-and-so is gone" angle. WHO IS TRADING UP IN THIS DRAFT?

Nobody.

re: The 5th pick scenario

Jazz could. They need a PG and I think they have 2 picks. could also trade out the draft for a young vet. I know Monty said in an interview that we are too young of a team. CJ McCollum could rise to that spot. Lots of possibilities really.

Also wouldn't be surprised that if Orlando falls to third or even second in the draft, they take Burke with Afflalo locked up and needing a PG pretty badly.

Sure they could, they won't. This isn't the NFL draft, teams don't trade up especially for this class.

re: The 5th pick scenario

Agreed. Almost all of the time they don't because there is too much value in the top 5 compared to late lottery and teams would rather acquire a better asset that can be traded draft time, July, or a later date rather than moving down in a draft.

I also cringe at the idea of New Orleans drafting a guy named Nerlens. Hearing the "Nawlins" dumbasses is bad enough.

Let's be honest. Sullinger's drop also had to do with being 6'6" while Perry Jones' game was seriously questioned before the draft.

Yea. PJ3's motor was really questioned big time. Sully was considered too short and not athletic snout her to make up for that. Also, they said he doesn't play above the rim.
