Lots of money. Bait and Tackle costs wayyyyy too damn much. That being said, I have more than I'll ever actually use. Also, when asking for tips and tricks, it'd be extremely helpful to know where you're fishing. (pond, lake, river) as well as which area of the world you'll be fishing in. All of this makes a pretty big difference. The only sure fire that I know of that works everywhere is White Spinner Baits.

Dont change baits every two minutes.
Learn how to work certain baits like they are meant to be worked.
If you are fishing a certain lake then learn the patterns of that lake.
This could be 100 page thread.

Get some good spinnerbaits, a frog, and some worms. That's all you really need to catch fish 95% of the time

Chartreuse/white with a Gold and a silver spoon for the spinner
Brown for the frog
I like purple with a pink tail for worms

Spinnerbaits and Texas Rigged Worms are the best start. Clear water, you can use more natural looking colors. Darker water, stick to white and bright colors. Always try to find either 1. Some sort of cover. 2. A drastic change in water depth. You can never cast too many times in the same place, some bass are stubborn and it'll take a little enticing to make them bite. Finally, don't get discouraged after the first few failures. Bass fishing is an art. The more you work at it, the better you'll get. Also, youtube has tons of videos on proper bait presentation. Start watching.

mow mow taught me to spit on my worm before i chunk it.
you catch more fish with yer bait in the water and your eyes on the line.
lures will end up being in the old 80/20 rule. in the beginning don't get caught up in buying one of everything, it will happen soon enough anyway.
i caught alot more fish in my old welded aluminum boat with the little yammerhammer than i ever did with the pretty metal flake glass boat with the monster yammerhammer..
there could be a book or 47 written on this stuff on here...

Keep it simple. Buy a few lures, frogs, spinner baits, rattle traps are good as well for covering a lot of area. I don't like soft plastics (worms) but they do work, just fish them slow. Fish lily pads, stumps you can see, any kind of cover. If all else fails to buy a dozen minnows, a bobber and a few split shot weights and some hooks. Stick to spinning reels for now. Watch Hank Parker and Bill Dance, they have some good tips, especially on lure presentation. Best advice is to have fun.

It's not easy fishing there, just have to fish slowly and fish structure.

The only success I've ever had there was using a worm, slow slow SLOW. I'm not a good bass fisherman though, so take that with a grain of salt.

Soft plastics such as worms, lizards, and flukes. Spinnerbaits, rattletraps, crankbaits, and some type of jerk bait. Bass are very particular. I've fished for hours not catching anything with any of those baits. Switched to a red hook and bam, started killing them. You just have to figure out what they want.

I'm too lazy to type everything I want to say. For your plastics pick the basic colors and get different baits like senko's, baby brush hogs, trick worms, finesse worms and lizards. The craws and all the other creature baits can come later.

Black
Green pumpkin
Watermelon
Watermelon red
Watermelon blue
Red shad
Tequila sunrise
June bug

I would recommend switching baits of they aren't biting and not staying and casting in one place to long unless I really bribed there was a fish there. Call me crazy but I like to cover more water and find what bait there going to hit the best. Also if you fishing with someone fish with different baits until you find what they want.
