Simmons just tweeted this out.

Considering when Kobe would come back from his injury and how much it could save Lakers on luxury tax, isn't this really the best option for them?

Kobe's contract is insured at about 85% value for injury, meaning he only costs the team a few million in actual salary.

The team will also get an injury exception worth a lot of salary cap space to replace him, which I think is something like 50% of his massive salary.

Yes that's the real big part. the tax escalates this coming year due to the new CBA iirc.

If he gets amnestied isn't it a bidding process for his rights? Can you trade a player as part of that?

No, you can't trade a player as part of that bidding process.

Only teams under the cap can bid.

No trading.

Team can put in a full waiver claim which would mean the team with the worst record would get him and be responsible for the full amount left on his deal, which i think is 1 year/$30mil.

If no one puts in a full waiver, then it goes to who puts in the highest partial waiver. So if the highest bidder is $15mil, hypothetically, that team gets Kobe for that price, and the Lakers pay the remainder.

I still can't see the Lakers doing it, I think they would still eat the cost as a show of goodwill, though a very pricey show of goodwill lol.
