re: New Orleans Saints: Best and Worst draft picks

I agree with the Sullivan pick as the worst. I was truly disappointed when the Saints drafted him.

At least with Ricky Williams, I felt some sense of urgency to get the season started. Trading all those picks was brutal though. But I liked our offensive line at the time of the Ricky Williams pick and felt like he was going to do pretty well in New Orleans.

Archie Manning on there is ridiculous. It either has to be worst draft picks at the time or in hindsight. At the time Sullivan drafted he seemed like a beast to many. People wanted others sure, but still. After the fact, gimme a break. Archie played on the worst teams of all time......... you know what. never mind. +1 troll

The Saints' worst pick was also the worst in the history of the NFL------------- Russell Erxeleben.

frick this guy.

He is trying to argue that Archie Manning is one of the worst. The following players selected in the first round were not mentioned:

Les Kelley
Royce Smith
Larry Burton
Joe Campbell
Lindsay Scott
Alvin Toles
Shawn Knight
Vaughn Dunbar
Irv Smith
Reynaldo Turnbull
Chris Naeole
Alex Molden

Archie Manning is worse than them. They could have had Lynn Dickey in the third round. Whatthefrickever.

This and it's not even close.

Alex Molden was a 1st round Fred Thomas. Toast on every play. Naeole was wtf bc he was a G. You look that way later rounds or free agency. McAllister was the best of the decade imo from a stability concern regarding Ricky.

Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell are worse. Erxleben was at least competent at his position for a few years.

Considering the cost and draft position, Jonathan Sullivan and Kevin Hardy were MUCH worse.

In reality, the worst thing they ever did was trade the rights to draft Bubba Smith first overall for Gary Cuozzo.

Um, Rick Middleton says hello, you know, the Ohio State teammate we drafted ahead of Randy Gradishar...

Leaf and Russell aren't worse. I don't give a shite how competent he was, he was a damn punter. You don't draft a punter in the first round. At least with leaf and Russell you were trying to make your team better. Obviously didn't work, but still better than drafting a punter.

I respectfully disagree. If you are Les Kelley or Kevin Hardy and you can't even crack the lineup on a shitty expansion team on an era where the cards were heavily stacked against you putting together a decent team, you are a worthless sack of shite.

Irv Smith, Renaldo Turnbull, and Chris Naeole all had respectable careers in a Saints uniform.

re: New Orleans Saints: Best and Worst draft picks

agreed, but really it depends on how you define worst. If its the worst decision that was made given the information at the time then I dont think the raiders drafting russell would be anywhere near the worst; they need a qb, and he was an absolute freak. they would have been ridiculed for doing anything else at the time. the picks we gave up to draft RW was absolutely moronic. the marginal advantage of a great rb over a very good rb is overestimated in general, but giving up that many picks in the HOPES of ending up with a great rb is just moronic. and the Erxleben pick just blows my mind

re: New Orleans Saints: Best and Worst draft picks

You need more than a list to document all of the Saints horrible high draft picks. There's enough to write a book.

Chapter One of the book: Gary Cuozzo. For the 1967 season, the Saints traded the very First pick of the draft to the Baltimore Colts in exchange for Johnny Unitas's back-up QB. Cuozzo was SO awesome at QB that Billy Kilmer beat Cuozzo out for the starting job. Kilmer began his NFL career as a Halfback.

Chapter Two: Les Kelley. For the inaugural 1967 season, the New Orleans Saints had the very last pick of the First Round of the draft. The Saints used the pick to draft Alabama running back Les Kelley. Les Kelley played in the NFL for three years and never won the starting running back job on any NFL team.

So, that's TWO First Round draft picks that the Saints had for their inaugural season, and, the Saints managed EPIC FAIL on both.

Like I said, this subject is enough to fill a book.

LINK

PS Note that the Colts used the draft pick that they got for Cuozzo to draft BUBBA SMITH.

I don't remember the Mecom era, but Shawn Knight was the worst since I've been watching. Colston or Evans has to be best if value is part of the equation.

re: New Orleans Saints: Best and Worst draft picks

Since I have been watching Sullivan and Ricky Williams were the worst picks b/c they were so high. Andy Allerman, Courtney Watson and Alfred Fincer were complete busts who were taken in the second or third round which are places I expect to at least get solid contributors.

In recent years it seems like there haven't been a lot of complete busts, but just a ton of guys who are disappointments or who at best get a "jury is still out" grade such as Patrick Robinson, Usama Young, & Charles Brown.

On the plus side, Marques Colston, Jahri Evans, Jimmy Graham, and Carl Nicks have been very good values.

I just went with Sullivan because we had two first round picks that year and traded them to get him.

I'm sure there are worse ones than him but in my lifetime as a Saints fan.. he still stands out more than any other.

re: New Orleans Saints: Best and Worst draft picks

How many times do we have to do this? The worst by far was Russell Erxeleben. Not only did he not do anything, how could a team with our horrible records draft a kicker number 1. The best was Ricky Jackson even though he was not a number 1.
