Action movies are difficult to rank bc the technological advances in cinema have made current action movies muuuuuuuuch more realistic and ultimately I believe entertaining.
Example: I think most critics would have Die Hard, Terminator, Raiders of the Lost Ark pretty highly ranked
Personally, I think Dark Knight blows these out of the water in almost every facet of the movie but I would be pretty shocked if you saw TDK ranked higher than those. At some point the technological advances have to amount to something when you start comparing movies.
I would have to do some research to see if that's true tho.

The first argument is that we can't realize the VALUE of these films until 20 years down the line, and that has some truth to it. What movies are inspirations? What movies leave lasting marks on society? All of that matters, but isn't instantly recognizable.
The second idea is that there has to be a level of comfort with the top, that you have to, at least, give it a few years to sink in. Some films are transcendent: Everyone knows the value of Jurassic Park, Pulp Fiction was instantly recognized as a classic. Others, not so much.

I think, unless otherwise stated, "Best Movie of All-Time" lists, that you are referencing in this regard, often have the unlisted requirement of a films WITHIN TIME, not AT THIS MOMENT (we are a society of AT THIS MOMENT, so I can see how this might be a little confusing). There's a big difference in:
1. Best Movies of All-Time Right Now
2. Best Movies of All-Time Through Time
You may think they people mean #1, but they may be unclear in their own explanation of what it SHOULD mean.
People also rarely define what "Best" means. I n most cases they are considering "Film History," so anything in the last 5 years can't be properly evaluated.
Whether or not film history should be weighed, well that's a personal opinion.

Don't really hate a lot of movies but I hated Michael Clayton, especially after knowing the good reviews it got.
ETA: I don't hate Vertigo, but it's the other movie with such a large discrepancy between my opinion and critical reviews for it. I don't care for it at all.

Just reminded me of Michael Clayton, if only it was as good as MC #14 when he was at LSU, terrible. And I'm not sure if Syriana was acclaimed but it was boring too me.

....That doesn't mean I have to enjoy the experience. It has an awful moral center and it glamorizes evil. Not even just violence. And people love it for that.
So yes, it had a horrible affect on society but, as you admit, it's still an excellent film. I also don't think you interpret Michael in the way he was intended to be interpreted. My interpretation was that the films were a two part case study on utter, complete human corruption. The fact that people like the violence doesn't bother me. People can like whatever they want for whatever reason. It doesn't change my own reading.
And yes, I take your disdain for the movie as contrarian for the sake of it. You could have simply posted Peter Griffin's monologue and be done with it.

All fair points. But I never said it was an excellent film. I said it was well-made. Superficially, it is fantastic. Tear into it just a little bit and you'll find flaws (Micheal's lack of agency for one).

So me disliking the film on moral grounds and admitting that movie is very well made in the very same post makes me contrarian? That's still ridiculous. I'm not hating to hate.

I didn't say, "The Godfather sucks! I'm out." That might be contrarian.
AND to even let the possibility of "contrarian" exist means that the film should be seen as infallible. That is equally ridiculous.
So we're all supposed to just like the film? No one can dislike it?

Personally, I love Scarface.
I also like Goodfellas, though I don't think it's as good as some make it out to be.
Field of Dreams is another that I've never really cared for.
Still, Top Gun and Titanic top my list.

is one of the most devilishly ironic and crushing moments in movie history. It's such a complete apostacy. I love it.

"Morality?" I've seen you post here for years, and I've never seen you give a shite about a film's "morality." That sounds like the excuse of a guy who can't come up with a plausible reason to say he dislikes a film (just for the frick of it), so he grasps for a straw that cannot be refuted. I.E., I cannot debate your own personal "morality," ergo your position is inarguable.

I actually didn't care for the original Godfather until AFTER I saw Part 2. I honestly liked the "Godfather Saga" TV version the best, when everything was in correct chronological sequence.
