We're talking about two different kinds of grittiness. But I would agree....
But Prometheus is exactly that as well. Get past Scott's color tones and the movie is also extremely "digitized."
Think about JC...pretty much the exact opposite color palette.

It was cleaner but the things still had grit. Plus they shot on real sets with real things. it was still great. maybe an small instance of fakey fake riding to the chambers. I'm color blind so I'm not going to try and talk about color palettes. My 2 1/2 yo nephew is better with colors

I brought up color as another counterpoint to your reaction.
It is/was sounding to me that you really wanted something more complex/dense/heavy. That's how Nolan is making films nowadays (among others) and they have their place. Prometheus fits very comfortably with the "gritty reality," with loads of depression, and (you guessed it), blue and grey color palettes.
John Carter both artistically, and thematically, is about as opposite as you can get. Which is maybe where your reaction is coming from.
But the color blindness thing ruins all of that.

Yeah, big time. I have an app on my phone that supposedly makes it so I can see colors the way eveyone else does. I will say that Prometheus is visually stunning and that's a huge plus but not in the way it sounds. The frame isn't cluttered up with cgi shite. I just appreciate old fashioned production values like sets and costumes. I know that sounds stupid but it's completely missing from the genre today as with action movies. Bigger is not better, Hollywood.

We can agree on this,
While I love the Hobbit, I think a lot of the soul was missing without real orcs. It just felt plastic.
I'll admit, John Carter had that too. I felt that it wasn't necessarily a knock on the film though. It's hard NOT to do that currently, given costs.
