Lets have a discussion about scupper valves

I am looking at a few different ones. The one with the ping pong ball in it, duck bill, just the regular flush mount, etc...

For a self bailing hull, you know lets water out, not supposed to let water in.

I like the black rubber flapper scupper valves.
Mine are rear transom mount.
If you are putting them on the gunwales/floor, you mite need a better seal like the ping pong balls.
But, the ping ball types need to be kept really clean to get a good seal.

I've got the pingpong ball type on my transom. They work well when they don't have a bunch of crud packing them off.

This has also crossed my mind, but I'm sure as soon as I do I'm going to get caught in a storm and end up standing in ankle deep of water.

That's the ones that i have 34 and they work perfectly fine. Flush mounted on the transom. The rubber has to be replaced every couple of years but it costs like 3 bucks and takes 2 minutes.

My bilge works great for anything fresh. I'd probably rethink it on my one salt trip per year. I mean, no bass boats have them.

My issue with the whole deal is, when two people get in the back of my boat, the valves are under the water line. I've had water come in that way because the tubing was installed incorrectly. replacing that shite is no fun. No fun at all.

i changed from ones that were completely flat to the ones that 34 put a picture of. I thought they were going to be more durable than the ones that just have flat rubber, which they are more durable, but they stick out about 1/4" at rest. so a little water gets in before the water pressure closes it. none of them are completely dry I guess. If I want the boat to be completely dry I put a snap plug in them from the inside.
Hardly any boats are designed correctly to sit fully loaded and people fishing out of the back to drain the deck. usually the scupper deck drains are under the water in that situation.

It really doesn't matter until you need them. On the Twin Vee I had 2 on each side with 3 bilge pumps on each side. 1 assisted the scuppers, 1 drained rear hold, the other was for backup. I like the flapper types, gets much more flow thru them and don't get fouled up with trash as easy as the ball type. Sunflower seeds will mess them up in heartbeat.
