Thoughts on the Leonhard situation and how it affects Harper/the Draft

Leonhard is a backup and a specialist. I don't think that he is coming in to compete for the job. If anyone will it will be Rafael Bush- both him and IAQ played well down the stretch.

I think this signing may indicate there is a good chance that the Saints may be MORE likely to draft a top safety now. If the Saints trust Bush, and decide to draft Vaccaro, Elam, or Cyprien (assuming one of the other front 7 playmakers are not there), then they can have Bush get the nod as starter for now and let one of those 3 compete. It would save us $3.6 mill (i'm pretty sure) in cap space for this year to release Harper and would allow us to pursue another quality guy (McKinnie, Clabo, Winfield, Harrison, etc. or maybe a mid level receiver for depth)

In this scenario however, a tradeback (the hot topic right now) would be risky if we are targeting a safety. The Rams, Cowboys, and Bengals are all in the market for a safety. And if the most highly suggested partner (Minnesota) went up to try and grab someone like Austin, the Rams still would pick twice (16 & 22) before us and could grab a safety and a WR, and Dallas 18 and Cincy 21 also select in front. (Although if Cincy doesn't resign Andre Smith they may go OT first round).

Just my take.

The Saints don't like to leave themselves in the position of HAVING to fill a need via the draft. So I would say nyet.

Off to talk with bibi on "titituesday".

I know this sounds a little out there, but I'm basing it off of us releasing Harper if a safety is there. And this is only conditioned upon a top front 7 man not being there.

If someone like Eric Reid somehow fell to 3rd round that would be a good time for a S

Still think Harper will be gone before camp, otherwise they would have restructured him.

Saints will have to go DL and/or possibly OT if the right one falls at the 15 pick or one of the top LB's.

Harper wouldn't be released until after the draft. And that would only be if we chose a safety.

No I know that Chad, my point was that we are in an advantageous position now to take a top safety if they come to us, even if we traded back. If not take BPA, and then we could free up the cap room with harper still designating post june 1. There would be no point to release him now until we know what we have after the draft. Just think it increases the likelihood.

ETA: If we don't draft one, he stays put, no harm done.

still have no idea how leon hard makes anything more likely at safety position.

He knows the Ryan system, solid backup with experience. Bush in, Harper out. Still risky based on bush's lack of experience . So get a stud and you have two for cheap. Profit?

so your theory is based on we cut roman but we aren't doing that till after the draft and leon hard isn't here to compete for a starting job anyways with Roman getting cut with a potential rookie and bush vying for starting time.

I think he's saying we get a "stud" in the draft which makes all the moves moot?

Yeah. I'm fine with bush and Elam, vacarro, or cyprien competing for starting job. With a preference for cyprien.

I'm all for taking Rambo in the 3rd, but I don't think the Leonhard signing has anything to do with the draft.

Also, if we were going to draft a safety, we'd keep Harper and just draft a safety to compete with him and Jenkins. Not sign another guy for depth.

Well it does make sense if we are preparing to draft a safety. Let's say for argument sake (excluding whether or not it is more likely or not we draft a safety as a result of this move) that we do in fact take one in the first. Whether it be at 15, or if we traded back. You honestly think they will keep Harper, with Bush showing he is at least a serviceable plug in, and a new guy coming in with a high ceiling? The freeing up of the 3.6 mill would be the biggest factor that I say he's gone if this happens because there are still a lot of holes we could fill with that money, and some pretty decent FA's available still.

We wouldn't save the money until June 1st either way. Makes no sense to cut him now unless we really need $1 mil(and even then there are better options).

But I don't see Harper going anywhere this year. Next year is going to be the year he extends or gets cut.

Leonhard is here to push the backups(mostly Bush) and for vet depth and special teams. If we draft a safety Jenkins(who'd save us $2.5 mil) would be the one in trouble.

I know you were responding to Chad, but I wasn't suggesting cut him until after June 1 (and ONLY if we go safety), where he would save $3.6 mill this year (more than Jenkins $2.5). Also Jenkins could always move to a nickel role because of his corner experience. Harper is one-dimensional.

It'd be an honorable thing to do to let him find a new employer as early as possible. No sense keeping him either.

Do you think they would sign Leonhard to cut Harper?

Do you think they would go into the season with two complete unknown players when they know what they have in Harper?

Do you think they would sign a guy who has not been a regular starter in the league to replace Harper?
