Great family, I've talked with his dad at many away LSU baseball games a few years ago. Very nice guy!

Are they still using the Diamond Rio song or changing to a more upbeat song? That shite makes my eyes water every year

I know they have been real protective over the video but I think it would be great to release the old one if they are not going to use it any more.

I remember watching LSU play VCU in a regional at the old box, and we had low level bleacher seats right by 3rd base.

The story was that day that Wally missed pregame batting practice because he had a final exam...so a lot of the guys in the bleachers behind us were asking "Hey Wally, how'd you do on that exam?" in between pitches, he looked over and gave our section a thumbs up.

After the game, he came over and talked to us, and signed a ball for one of the guys kids. The signature read "89 B+...Wally Pontiff #31"

Could they stich 31 into the actual third base?

That wouldn't work. We have to move the bases around for that "capitol 1 lucky base" or whatever it is promotion every game. The bottom of 2 of them are red and one of them is green.

That's cool to know. I'm going to make a point to witness this next home game.

These are the types of stories that make players memorable. I love when players will just come interact like people and not feel like they are god's gift to the university because they can play a sport.

I have the gold 31 t-shirt from one of the Pontiff Classic games. I wore it to every post season game in 08 and 09. Took pics with the Pontiffs at the SEC tourney after Wally Sr. stopped me and thanked me for wearing the shirt. Got Nick to sign it at the celebration at the box after the 09 cws. It's been retired since then.

Zach Rau ?@zrau 42m
LSU will play for win #31 in tonight's Pontiff Classic. Mason Katz and Christian Ibarra have also reached base in 31 consecutive games.

ETA: sorry, I know him in person so it's weird to see his tweets quoted. A lot of people think he's a writer or something

I don't know guys, I really like the grounds crew writing 31 in the dirt. Thats something that can be handed down forever in LSU baseball to each grounds crew that takes care of the field. Something about your number written in the dirt just seems like a more fitting baseball tribute to a player.

Ditto this. Has much more meaning. I never met him, but having watched him play, I could imagine Wally would much rather this than something more "formal"

How long before game time does he do this?

Typically about 15 min before the game. I hold the string that they use as the guide to paint the foul lines before the game. Usually right after I am pulling the string up after the 3rd base foul line is painted, they will put 3rd base in the ground he will draw it.

I'm going to watch for this at the game tomorrow night.
