ASOIAF "What if?" *spoilers*

As a hypothetical, let's say that Khal Drogo did not get an infection, did not lose his mind, and was not killed by Khaleesi. All other events unfold as normal (death of Robert Baratheon, death of Ned Stark, the subsequent wars for the Iron Throne and the North rebelling for revenge). Do you think Drogo with his Dothraki horde would have been able to take over Westeros and place Dany on the Iron Throne?

I think so.

Think of a horde of Gregor Cleganes with justice on their side. They'd be savage and the people would love them for it since they were dethroning Joffery and putting the Targaeryans back on the throne.

I think so. That's what made Drogo and Dany marrying a dothraki Khal so important. It'd be pointless if she married him, tries to take over Westeros by using Drogo and the dothraki only to be defeated. Marrying Drogo gave her the resources to at least put up a damn fight to take back Westeros.

And once she got to Westeros, there would be some lords and cities still loyal to her. So she would get some of them too. Dorne??

Robert Baratheon may have led an army out to face them in the field but Tywin Lannister would have had his forces holed up in their respective castles and waited for winter to take its toll. It would have been tough on the smallfolk but eventually the Dothraki horde woud've collapsed through boredom and lack of provision.

The Red God has certainly demonstrated the most power so far. Its really not clear if there are old gods aside from the greenseers. And I've seen no reason to think the new gods ever existed at all.

1. Dany has no dragons
2. Dothraki have no heavy infantry
3. disciplined Andal pikemen in a solid defensive position would rape dothraki cavalry, especially if they utilize a solid shield wall to negate Dothraki horse archers
4. dothraki have no siege technology
5. Dany may have had a navy of transport ships, but her navy would not have been capable of closing off ports from the sea or combating the navies of Westeros.
6. Dany bringing a foreign army ashore may have caused the fractured Westeros to unite against a common enemy.
7. Dothraki tend to desert their Khalasars after losses.

Clearly the Red God. I have looked into the flame and seen his power, for the night is dark and full of terrors, and only The Lord of Light can guide us through them.

Too bad the New Gods aren't real. At least the Old Gods and R'hllor have some substance to them and have shown their power. Haven't seen one but of evidence that the Seven have done shite in the series.

If the facts stayed as we knew them in GoT, then yes, probably.

The Dothraki are essentially the Golden Horde, the Mongol nation. If Khal Drogo had survived, he very well could have united some of the other clans under one banner and taken Westeros in the same fashion Ghengis Khan decimated an entire continent. Particularly given the fractured nature of Westeros at the time.

JMO, Dothraki/Daenerys would have won.

Brutally effective light infantry. I think the dragons would have hatched regardless. With the way Daenerys kept putting them on hot surfaces/incubating them and experimenting with her own immunity to flame I think it is inevitable she would have completely immolated them at some point in the near future causing them to hatch. But perhaps there is a metaphysical component to their hatching that could only be met by the Khal's death. I've only seen the show, but I didn't get that impression.

So we've got Dothraki, dragons, and remember Khal Drogo told the Dothraki to take gold, not because they put stock in it but because they understood they'd need it to buy passage across the sea. I could see them also using it to incorporate siege engines in their warfare.

Finally, it was stated multiple times that there were houses/factions still loyal to House Targaryen. Those houses could provide cavalry and pikes. Perhaps it is a foreign army, but it's a foreign army with a Targaryen at its head. How is that any different than other houses intermarrying to strengthen alliances? That's the beauty of the Khal Drogo/Daenerys union.

The most visible weakness is the lack of a navy, which could potentially be overcome depending on how strategically they planned their advance and seized resources.

The New Gods have an army because of Cersei. That is hardly powerless.

As for the Dothraki, would Illyrio Mopatis fund the ships to transport them across the Narrow Sea?
