No, you must periodically connect to the internet to check licenses. If it wasn't that way then what's to stop someone from putting accounts on multiple computers and never reconnecting.

Still, periodically =/= always having to be online to go offline. Having to authenticate your information once every certain amount of time and having to be online always are not the same thing, obviously.

It's a pretty common and widespread issue that won't be solved soon. It would be counter-productive for Valve to allow users to be totally offline.

It was a lot worse in the past. Steam was a shitty program overall when it first launched.

I think I understand now why its taken so long for "next gen" consoles to be announced.

It just really looks like these companies had no idea what direction they wanted to go. They're going to be forever stuck in the dilemma of trying to make something that's affordable while at the same time lasts awhile technologically.

To all the people saying steam requires people to be online, people that use PC's have been used to this for a long time and there is generally an older crowd using them. The issue with the xbox is that we're talking about a console kids will be opening on christmas and not able to use. It's about the console space being always on which is something that has never been required before. You can't just brush it off as not a big deal by comparing it to steam. Apples and oranges.
