His last ballot for the critics Greatest Films Poll of Sight and Sound:

2001: A Space Odyssey
Aguirre, the Wrath of God
Apocalypse Now
Citizen Kane
La Dolce Vita
The General
Raging Bull
Tokyo Story
The Tree of Life
Vertigo

But he always submitted it with a caveat to his readers:

I decided not to do that--trash the 2002 list and start again. It was too much like a stunt. Lists are ridiculous, but if you're going to vote, you have to play the game. Besides, the thought of starting with a blank page and a list of all the films ever made fills me with despair.

So there must be one new film.

I will choose "The Tree of Life" because it is more affirmative and hopeful. I realize that isn't a defensible reasons for choosing one film over the other, but it is my reason, and making this list is essentially impossible, anyway.

Apart from any other motive for putting a movie title on a list like this, there is always the motive of propaganda: Critics add a title hoping to draw attention to it, and encourage others to see it. For 2012, I suppose this is my propaganda title. I believe it's an important film, and will only increase in stature over the years.

His review for 2001: A Space Odyssey changed the way I viewed films (as well as the film itself)

Agree.

"Tree of Life" and "Vertigo", particularly, are truly shitty movies. I always preferred Siskel's tastes to Ebert's.

Vertigo is overly long with a truly stupid weak ending. The initial critics had it right by hating the film.

The ending is garbage mainly because of terrible direction.

The middle was full of boring and implausible scenes, too.

Yeah but the ending is just a terrible shot. Without spoilering it, there was no reason for her reaction and She was too damn far away for that to happen.

Movie would have been 1000% better if Stewart's character helped her head that way.

It's official. Hipster means nothing. Roger Ebert was a hipster? Really?

Oh, and that was for Sight and Sound. By the standards of that magazine, Ebert's list is downright plebian.

Didn't you hear? If you enjoy Italian films from the 1960s you're a PBR swilling uber douche who could not possibly enjoy a movie that filthy, uninformed commoners would go see.

Exactly.

Check out Woody Allen's list:

The 400 Blows (1959) – Francois Truffaut
8½ (1963) – Federico Fellini
Amarcord (1972) – Federico Fellini
The Bicycle Theives (1948) – Vittorio de Sica
Citizen Kane (1941) – Orson Welles
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) – Luis Bunel
La grand illusion (1937) – Jean Renoir
Paths of Glory (1957) – Stanley Kubrick
Rashomon (1950) – Akira Kurosawa
The Seventh Seal (1957) – Ingmar Bergman

Most are like this...except for Tarantino, who had "Bad News Bears" in his Top 10 Greatest of All Time.

Dirty hipster.

You don't play Garth Brooks? I wouldn't piss up your arse if your guts were on fire.

Well, I appreciate you not pissing in my arse under any circumstances. That sounds decidedly uncomfortable, and a really poor way to put out the fire in my guts.

What does Garth Books have to do with this? I like Ropin in the Wind as much as the next guy.

I lost some respect for every critic who claimed to like that movie. And there were a lot of them. I can accept a difference of opinion up to a certain point, but someone liking The Tree of Life?. . . That, I cannot abide.

Its a really good movie. Beautiful piece of film. I understand if you didnt dig it, but that certainly doesnt mean that it sucks. Do you not understand that everyone doesnt enjoy the same things? Do you think you opinion is supreme? It isn't.
