re: Why is everyone sold on Akiem Hicks being a solid 3-4 DE?

Margus Hunt
Not in the first but if he falls to a later pick for sure. He is a little undersized though
Bjorn Werner is small for a 3-4 DE.

That's exactly what I've been saying. There is potential for these draftees but we have young guys with potential and have already adapted to the nfl. Some of these draftees never will.
If what you need isn't there than you go with who you think has the most upside.

Only a handful of major college programs (UCLA, UGA, sort of Bama) play the 3-4, so that's going to apply to most anyone drafted. Hunt looks like a solid player, but he was 4 or 5 years older than most everyone he played against in college, so he had a pretty significant physical advantage over a bunch of guys that were still growing. He's going to be 26 this season and 30 coming off of his rookie deal.

I'm more interested to see whats going to happen to Will Smith. He has eaten himself into a 3-4 end, but I think Hicks and Jordan are better options. I just don't see paying him all that money to be a backup. I've seen him projected to play all over the line and even rush olb. LOL.

He's got good size with elite athleticism for a guy that size. Do NOT give me Hunt at 15. DO NOT.

I think it would have cost more to cut him, so they kept him on at a reduced rate and he will rotate in the line up. I just can't see him being an every down (or even majority of downs) player.

Is it possible Will Smith is fat enough to play NT now?

We can free up his base salary ($3m) by cutting him after June 1st, but at that point it would be a result of either having to free his salary to sign draft picks, or there's a FA still available (feed me Seymour?) that we like more.

Jimmy Graham played 1 season of football before coming to the saints. I know its not the same position, but i believe the less they have been coached before the better off they are. Raw talent with top tier coaching should yeild the most ideal players.
He would be an asset on special teams with all those blocked kicks.
I just wouldnt count him out because of experience.

Have you watched his highlight films? Graham is a phenominal athlete. Hunt has great size. Good in-line speed. Great power. He's stiff and upright though. He looks like the NFL version of Adam Morrison. Besides, he didn't do crap in college against bad competition.

It's not JUST the lack of experience. Its age. He becomes our oldest defensive lineman besides Will Smith and Bunkley if we pick him.
And how long has Gallette or Wilson been trying to find their role? If Hunt takes the same amount of time, he will be 28-29 before he "figures it out" and has any impact.

Will Smith couldn't cover a statue coming out of the backfield.

Hicks resembles Richard Seymour physically and athletically. So that's why.

I see your points. Just don't think he'd be considerd a 1st/2nd round pick If he wasn't worth it.
