I think they knew how good he was/ could be. My understanding is that SAF didn't like him because of the way he handled the contract situation and decided against letting him see the field.

Pogba was supposedly miffed because he was promised a lot more game time than he received. Hence why the contract talks went down the toilet. Although it's possible something else went down, as it makes no sense to promise a player PT, then keep him on the bench, and then get angry at the player for wanting to leave.
