Maybe, but it's not one that ever comes to mind when anybody is asked "what are the greatest movies ever made?".... so maybe not.

eta: I still get nervous EVERY TIME watching that railroad bridge scene.

I'm the same way, it's an excellent movie.

One of the greatest ever? I don't know.

Definitely one of my top 10. No other movie that I can think of captures the Transition of the American boy into manhood.

It was a good/great movie. Don't know if it was the greatest movie ever made. I think Brian's Song would rank a little higher. JMO.

I loved Stand by Me. I also don't feel the need to pretend it's a legendary masterpiece or "one of the greatest".

Excellent movie but not in the greatest ever discussion IMHO.

I know this may be considered sacrilege but I thought the pie eating contest/barforama story detracted from the movie. It was just so different in tone from the rest of the flick.

I remember seeing it on TV and at the end whatever station it was on doing a very crappy job of editing what the author was typing by putting, "Does anybody?" instead of "Jesus, does anybody?"

Holy Crap! Just checked the Wikipedia entry on this movie. I had no frickin' idea that was Will Wheaton playing the part of Gordie. Dang.

It def holds up and it's something you can relate to when you're 8 (the 1st time I watched it) or 32 like I am now. Those fears are very real and something we all relate to. It holds up great, even after 25 years or however long it's been, it seems to have the same flavor as the first time. I guess it doesn't really come to mind in the "best movies ever" conversation..... But like you, if its on and I'm flipping channels, I have to stop and watch it and that says a lot.

Really? It comes on AMC probably about every 3 months or so. It was also on A&E like 2 or 3 weeks ago. Comes on reg tv quite a bit.

It would be more famous and played on TV more if they had pulled back on the cussing a lot and it could have gotten at least a PG 13 rating. Being rated R and being kind of a kids/teen movie really hampers it IMO. I loved it. My daughter loves it.

That is the worst gif ever. Why is he moving 100 miles an hour? I'm not even sure if that's what he's saying. I WANT ANSWERS
