re: Astros already setting marks for futility

And that all climaxed by getting swept in the World Series. The Astros just aren't a very good franchise. With the ownership unwilling to spend money, I don't see a reason to be optimistic for the future. Sure, you can say they are "rebuilding". But they have been doing that since 2006. At what point do you have to call "rebuilding" just being frugal.

There's so many inaccuracies there I don't know where to begin.

What? I didn't state any facts. Just observations.

Houston is not even a small market team. There should be no excuse for having a payroll so small.

re: Astros already setting marks for futility

I think most Astros fans, myself included, are excited about the direction of the team. With new ownership and a new front office, they are working to correct the mistake of the previous regime.

Very few teams consistently win year after year. The Astros are currently in a dry spell, but it is no different than what other teams have gone through. Over the last 20 years, they won the NL Central 4 times, made the WC twice and made it to the World Series. I don't think a single Astros fan would say they are an elite franchise, but they are a decent one. I don't have a list in front of me but I would suspect that would put them at least middle of the pack compared to the rest of MLB.

All of that won't change the fact that they will have some huge growing pains over the next few years. If they can turn it around like TB and Washington remains to be seen, but at least they seem to have a plan.

Why yes they are. They are stockpiling draft picks and trading for value. Jed Lowrie and Wandy aren't going to be elite players, why not trade them for some value? It's called building from scratch because about 3 years the cupboard was bare. The runs made in 2004 and 2005 came at the expense of the farm system combined with failing to sign 1st round picks for several years.

Very useful and insightful post. You are a true student of the game.

I agree but don't bother... it's going to fall onto deaf ears. There needs to be a median between rebuilding and spending. Right now its one sided and a lot of these Astros fans are just fine with it.

Pittsburgh Pirates rebuilding process 101... it's a great plan. They'll see results one day.

Astros fans aren't happy with the situation but understand that the new administration has a plan. Our farm system was simply too broken to buy our way out of it, thus building from the bottom was the choice.

I am about as bored with this discussion as our closer will be with his playing time.

My buddy who is a huge Rangers fans was really impressed with all the Ks they were getting against the Astros.

Now its not that i dont think the Rangers have very good pitchers...but i think its hilarious that he believes the common denominator is the great Rangers' pitching and not the Minor league hitters for the Stros...

As a lifelong Astros Fan this sucks so bad. We had awesome stretch from the late 90s with Hampton,Lima, and the Killer B's all the way through 2006 with Roger clemens,Roy O, and Andy leading a devastating pitching staff. The reason for all this is Drayton Mclane and his refusal to go over slot to sign draft picks bc he didn't want to piss off his buddy bud selig who hated teams that did that.

The team is bad and I'm ok with it now bc I see an awesome team on the horizon and with how MLB contracts are structured it will be another decade of success when their batting order in 2016 is

LF-Delino Deshields JR - stole 101 bases this yr
2B-Jose Altuve - All Star 2b puts ball in play often
SS-Carlos Correa - #1 pick, some say .300 hitter with power
1B-Jonathan Singleton - 30+homer potential 1b
CF-George Springer - 20/20 guy
RF - Domingo Santana-another 6'5 power bat
DH-Chris Carter-30 HR potential
3B-Rio Ruiz -power hitter we stole from USC
C-Jason Castro-garbage but few catchers arent

If that lineup pans out watch the F out, that will be one heck of a Killer B's type lineup with speed on top, a #2 hitter who puts the ball in play followed by 5-6 20+ hr guys with a few who may hit 30....again if it pans out....but ill take that vs years of battling for mediocrity signing crap like Woody Williams,Carlos Lee, and Jason Jennings.

We have the #1 pick again this year and possibly the #1 or #2 pick again next year. Add Mark Appel + another #1 pick + let's say 2 big time free agent pitchers bc now we have a young payroll that isn't costly....so 2 veteran pitchers +

Jared Cosart
Mark Appel

and a stud closer in Lance McCullers...some had him @#1 last yr but he fell bc of signability issues

and houston has a ballclub! Now ideally that's if all those guys pan out which will not happen, but one can dream

What is the current state of the Astros farm system? I mean they have to have at least some talent stockpiled after sucking for 6 years right?

This guy again. Let's sign overpriced Free Agents to put butts in the seats only to win 70 games.

You guys OBVIOUSLY have no idea what they're doing as a franchise and I really don't understand how hard it is to grasp what they're doing.
