That's why they're not spending money.

Yes. I know.

ETA: Don't they have one of the absolute worst farm systems?

Any early word on who Astros are looking at for first pick?

When is MLB going to start the contraction of these Minor League teams?

I would consider a few other teams before Astros, considering they make money and it was only 8 years ago they were in the W.S.

Minor league ball: #10
Keith Law: #4
Baseball America: #9

And that'll get another bump with the addition of a #1 pick this year.

Right now, its Mark Appel not followed closely by the other names. Things could change by June. Last year at this time, we weren't talking about Correa as #1.

Pretty solid. Is this an improvement on recent years, or have they consistently pulled those rankings?

A big improvement from about 3-4 years ago.

So I would have been correct in my assessment 3-4 years ago.

Huge improvement over the last several years. Drayton Mclane was Bud Selig's bitch when it came to signing draft picks. Selig frowns upon paying above slot for draft picks. Astros refused to do it and largely ignored the draft culminating in the complete abortion that was the 2007 draft. They didn't have picks in round 1 or 2 because of free agent signings. Most of the picks that did sign fizzled out and theres currently 0 picks from the 2007 draft that are still a part of the Astros organization. 0 of them have made the majors.

The last few years, the team has focused on signing their draft picks and has brought talent into the farm through all the trades. The draft last year was especially fruitful. Carlos Correa signed for a somewhat low amount which freed up a lot of money for the Astros to pay above slot and sway their picks to sign.

Yep, actually Ed Wade was the one that got it going in the right direction.

This what happens when you're rebuilding and was fully expected.

Give it 2-3 years and they'll be back in the thick of things.

No more shitty bloated contracts.

Get to see who is legit in the show.

Possibly can pick up FA's and flip for prospects.

Remember, the Astros were at their best when you had guys like Biggio, Bagwell, Berkman, Oswalt, etc coming up through the farm system.

Yep, I think that we'll be back to that soon, I hope.

Any chance they win more than 62 games this season?
