I really don't know, hence the post. The video card is listed on Autodesk's certified list and seems to provide quality performance for the price.

Im just askin. It looked to be somewhat of an overkill for just autocad. Any computer from your local best buy would run it fine. Gaming however, its looks like you did pretty good.

I dont know what any of that means, but that should be plenty

Autocad is pushing their "Design Suite" pretty hard these days, here's the recommended system requirements for 2014

well the v4900 is a lot less and also on the certified list, but the reviews show it has some blocking issues, thats why i went with the v5900.

anyone ever ran autocad on a gaming card with any success?

That is an awesome budget OC build.

I work in autocad with no hiccups just a single i5 2nd gen. Does he do any 3d?

Yes I have ran it with CUDA cores.

yeah i edited the title to reflect the need for 3D. could we reasonably get away with using a gaming card rather than the $410 v5900 ?

Idk, I never did large models. We used like Gtx470. That was a few years ago and I know it ran great with CUDA cores. It was piping in small units but ran pretty well.

You might have to do more research but I mostly use just regular autocad and not much 3d. I really don't know much about work gpus tbh.. I just know they have higher compute power.

yeah i can find plenty of charts and benchmarks on workstation cards running games, but not gaming cards running workstation apps. guess there isnt much demand for that.

i originally told client to be ready for a $1500 quote and they were fine with that, so at $1250 ill have enough profit in it. we make money on the service anyhow, not the retail side.

overkill IMO. eta: errr, 3D nevermind.

i'm judging because i know what my engineer buddies at the company run it with on the desktops the company buys for them. and that is not only 1/3 of the cost but would run circles around their Dells.

but i bet he ain't got dual Dell 40" LCD's lol.

Even with 3d, it's overkill. I've used some autocad 3d with my old HD 5770, and it was nice and smooth. Any dedicated GPU from this generation would be great. The most intensive activity will be zooming in and out, where the 3d model has to be redrawn each time.

A 7850 would go a very long way and save them some money.

Is he using Inventor or just autocad 3D?

Dual monitors?

I use most autodesk programs and have a beastly video card to handle it all. Ill check what kind I have when I get back to work.

ill have to check, but i think its autocad 3D. yes to dual monitors.

my initial inclination was to go with a FX8350 and a HD7850, but my boss said to go i7 because the purchasing manager has a bias towards intel.
